Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Jack Jewsbury and Kevin Souter scored in the second half and Kansas City defeated Toronto FC, 2-0, on Saturday night to win back-to-back games for the first time since the first two weeks of the season.
Jewsbury opened the scoring in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick, Souter scored his first goal in Major League Soccer in the 79th and goalie Kevin Hartman made three saves for his ninth shutout.
K.C. (8-9-8), which defeated Los Angeles 2-0 last weekend, improved to 7-2-3 at home this year. The Wizards entered the week four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot, and increased their chances of returning to the postseason.
Toronto FC (7-12-6), which is winless in six straight and last in the Eastern Conference, slipped five points back of Kansas City.
K.C. and TFC struggled in the first half at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, totaling just two scoring chances - both by the Wizards.
Kansas City's Jonathan Leathers (fifth minute) and Josh Wolff (44th minute) had the only shots on goal in the first half but Toronto goalie Greg Sutton stopped both.
Midfielder Rohan Ricketts had Toronto's only shot of the first half in the 12th minute.
TFC coach John Carver pulled forwards Chad Barrett and Carlos Ruiz in the 54th minute, turning to veteran Danny Dichio and 17-year-old Abdus Ibrahim to spark the sputtering offense.
Carver's move didn't pay off, though, as TFC continued to struggle on offense and the Wizards broke the scoreless tie less than 10 minutes later.
Toronto's Carl Robinson fouled Jewsbury in the penalty area in the 63rd minute and referee Baldomero Toledo pointed to the spot. Jewsbury converted the kick for his third goal of the season.
Toronto countered with its second shot of the game - also off target - by Amado Guevara in the 72nd minute.
Kansas City then clinched the win seven minutes later when Souter, making just his second MLS appearance, scored his first goal.
The Scottish midfielder, who has been playing on the Kansas City reserves, made his debut last weekend against Los Angeles, playing only 11 minutes. He entered this match in the 76th minute. Josh Wolff and Roger Espinoza set up the goal.
Dichio and Ibrahim failed to make an impact and the Canadian club finished with just three shots as it fell to 2-10 on the road this year. TFC hasn't won since Aug. 9 when it edged Colorado, 1-0.
Kansas City beat D.C. United (2-0) and Colorado (3-2) in its first two games of season for its only other winning streak, but had just four wins in its next 21 matches.
Kansas City will try to extend its run Sept. 27 at Chivas USA before returning home for consecutive games against Chicago, New England and San Jose.
Toronto FC returns to BMO Field on Sept. 27, but plays three of its final four matches on the road.
