Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Chivas USA jumped into second place in Major League Soccer's Western Conference table with a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake in the last league match at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night.
Alecko Eskandarian scored the game's only goal on a fluky play to hand RSL it's first home loss of the season, which drops them into a third-place tie with Colorado in the Western table. RSL will play its final three home matches of the regular season at it's new soccer-specific stadium in Sandy, UT.
Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy also had a strong game, making four strong saves in the match, all in the first half, to keep the Goats in the game even though they were badly outplayed by the home side prior to the break.
Eskandarian got the game-winner with less than 20 minutes to play when the newly acquired Sacha Victorine played a free kick into the RSL penalty area from distance before RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando collided with defender Nate Borchers. The ball bounced past them to Eskandarian, who then dribbled into the wide open for his third goal of the season.
Chivas USA (9-10-6) will try to further solidify its spot in the top three in the West when it hosts Kansas City next Saturday while RSL (8-10-7) will aim to rebound at San Jose later the same night in its next league fixture.
