Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - Colorado scored two first-half goals as the Rapids topped the Chicago Fire 2-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sunday afternoon in Major League Soccer action.
The first goal was scored 30 minutes in when Cory Gibbs started the play with a through-ball into the Fire penalty area to Jordan Harvey. Harvey fired the ball across the goalmouth just before it crossed the endline before it was knocked in by Chicago goalkeeper Jon Busch. Busch was credited with an own goal on the play.
Seven minutes later Omar Cummings took a pass from Terry Cooke and fired a long-range blast past Busch to make it 2-0 for the home side.
With the win, the Rapids move into a third-place tie in the Western table at 30 points after 24 league fixtures. The Fire still hold third in the East, but have just a three-point lead on the New York Red Bulls, who won Saturday.
The Rapids (9-12-3) host Eastern power New England next Saturday in their next league fixture while Chicago (11-8-5) hosts Dallas a day later.
