East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC entered their Major League Soccer fixture on Sunday deadlocked at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table.
But New York (7-6-7) now has new life this season with a 2-0 win over an Eastern opponent it is battling with for positioning in the crowded conference table - it's second such victory in two weeks.
"It was a fantastic result," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "I think we went the entire 90 minutes and deserved the three points. We had a great effort and some outstanding individual performances. It was great to have a clean sheet and a second consecutive win.
"I talked with the guys about how big this game would have been and it was. Hopefully it can raise the guys' confidence and we can not only come back after a deficit like we did last game [a 4-1 win over D.C. United], but we can also manage to build on a one-nil up lead, which is very difficult to manage sometimes, and we did that, so hopefully the guys can benefit from this."
Mike Magee scored his second game-winner in as many weeks and Juan Pablo Angel scored an insurance goal in stoppage time after a setup from Dane Richards to pace the offense.
"I think the win today was a collective effort, but I give a lot of credit to Mike [Magee]," Osorio said. "When I spoke to him a couple of times, I expressed my honest opinion; I think when he is one hundred percent healthy, he has a goal in him. Two goals in two games, and he is getting fitter and stronger and hopefully, he will continue contributing that way for his own benefit and the team."
"Goals in back-to-back games helps," Magee said. "Hopefully, I can get a few more this year and help the team in any way possible."
Magee and Angel provided the offense, but the story of the game was the Red Bulls' defense.
Playing a three-man backline that has become the staple of coach Juan Carlos Osorio's system, New York faced some early adversity. Starting center back Jeff Park suffered an ankle and had to come out just 25 minutes in and was replaced by Andrew Boyens.
That didn't seem to slow the Red Bulls down, however, as their recently revamped lineup controlled the ball for the majority of the first half while limiting the chances for either side.
The team got the first goal just before the break when Seth Stammler broke up a Toronto attack at the top of the New York 18-yard box and played a 60-yard bomb to Magee in stride. Magee took one touch and played a clinical shot past Toronto goalkeeper Greg Sutton inside the far post for the 1-0 Red Bulls' lead.
"It just came through a lack of communication from us," Toronto coach John Carver said. "We're in the 18-yard box, we lose possession, the ball is just hooked away, we're asleep on the halfway line and the next thing you know, it's in the back of the net."
Just after the break the Red Bulls' defense was faced with more adversity when right back Gabriel Cichero was given a straight red card in the 46th minute for elbowing TFC second-half substitute Danny Dichio in the side of the face as the two were competing for a 50-50 ball in the air.
"I would like to see the review of that play," Osorio said. "I didn't think it was that bad; probably worthy of a yellow card."
The ejection forced New York to play the entire second half down a man, but it didn't seem to matter as the team moved Stammler to right back and Boyens to center back alongside Kevin Goldthwaite on the left.
The trio shut down every TFC attack that came their way while the midfielders and forwards possessed the ball for long stretches, not allowing TFC to create many legitimate offensive chances.
"They stuck to their guns and worked ever so hard and made it difficult to break them down," carver said of the New York defense. "We should have had enough to break them down and we didn't. So a little credit goes to the coach to get them organized and to his team."
The Red Bulls added the insurance goal in the second minute of stoppage time when Jorge Rojas played a long ball to Richards streaking down the right sideline wide open. Richards controlled the ball and drove toward goal and instead of shooting with Sutton squared up to him, he passed square to Angel who had an easy tap in.
Toronto (7-9-4), which has lost three of its last four, will aim to rebound when it hosts New England on Saturday while the Red Bulls host Houston next Sunday in their next league fixture.
