Carson, CA (Sports Network) - When the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA squared off for the third and final regular season installment of the Los Angeles SuperClasico this season at The Home Depot Center on Thursday night, it was a pivotal game for both sides.
The Galaxy, who's GM was fired and coach resigned earlier this week, entered the Major League Soccer match winless in seven, while Chivas USA was winless in three, including two-straight losses.
After a tightly contested 2-2 draw on Thursday, both teams' winless streaks continue.
Alan Gordan's stoppage-time equalizer actually saved a point for the Galaxy (6-8-6) and interim coach Cobi Jones while Chivas USA wasted a perfect opportunity for their first win since July 5.
The game started with the Galaxy taking the play to Chivas USA (6-8-5).
Los Angeles was rewarded for its early domination when Landon Donovan scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season just eight minutes in.
Chris Klein took a pass from David Beckham and played a perfectly weighted pass to an onrushing Donovan on the right side. The U.S. international streaked toward goal and unleashed a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton for the 1-0 lead.
That was how the score stayed until the Goats got the equalizer five minutes after the break.
Midfielder Paulo Nagamura played a ball from the right side into the L.A. penalty area to forward Roberto Nurse, who dummied the ball - faking out two defenders - to a wide-open Atiba Harris on the left side of the box. Harris made no mistake, blasting home his second goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Harris returned the favor to Nagamura 13 minutes later when he controlled the ball on the left side, cut into the box and played a perfect through-ball past three defenders to the Brazilian breaking toward goal. Nagamura then one- touched a shot against the grain past L.A. goalkeeper Steve Cronin for the 2-1 lead.
That was how the game looked like it would end until second-half substitute Gordan nodded home an Ante Jazic cross into the far post side netting two minutes into stoppage time.
With the tie, the Galaxy take the season series for their fourth SuperClasico title in the five-year history of the L.A. rivals.
Chivas USA will aim to rebound from the disappointing result when it hosts the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday while the Galaxy travel to Chicago a day later for their next league fixture.
