East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Red Bulls earned their most important win so far this season, topping Eastern Conference rivals D.C. United 4-1 at Giants Stadium in Major League Soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
Juan Pablo Angel scored two goals, and Mike Magee and Sinisa Ubiparipovic each added one for the home side in the victory.
With the win, New York (6-6-7) moves into a four-way time for fourth place in the Eastern table with D.C., Toronto and Kansas City. All four teams are stuck on 25 points while D.C. has a game in hand on the other three.
D.C. (8-9-1) got the game's first goal when forward Luciano Emilio stumbled in the box with control of the ball and flicked out wide to Fred, who played a cross back in. Jaime Moreno knocked the chance home as defender Jeff Parke stumbled, giving the visitors the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
Angel equalized with his first goal of the game 11 minutes later. After Dave van den Bergh earned a free kick just outside the D.C. United penalty area, Angel ripped a perfect shot around the defensive wall and past the hands of United goalkeeper Zach Wells to make it 1-1.
Magee gave the Red Bulls the lead seconds before the first half break when Van den Bergh created the chance by breaking down left side and playing a perfect cross into the box. The ball got deflected to the top of the six-yard box by a defender with Wells reaching for the ball before Magee volleyed the chance home. Magee's second goal of the year made it 2-1.
Angel scored his second goal of the game and sixth of the season five minutes after the break when he flicked a bouncing ball over Wells, beating him to a Mark Burch back pass.
It was the first time New York has scored three in a game all season.
Late substitute Sinisa Ubiparipovic put the icing on the cake by scoring a goal in the 87th minute after one-timing a square pass from Jorge Rojas from the left side to close out the scoring.
New York will try to strengthen its position in the table when it hosts Toronto FC next Sunday while D.C. United plays at Chicago a day earlier in its next MLS fixture.
