MLS Game Summary - Los Angeles at San Jose

Final Score: Los Angeles 2 - San Jose 3

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Ryan Cochrane scored in the 90th minute as the San Jose Earthquakes edged the Los Angeles Galaxy, 3-2, in front of 26,071 fans at the McAfee Coliseum on Sunday for their first win in almost two months.

Arturo Alvarez scored in his debut for San Jose and recently-signed English striker Darren Huckerby scored his second goal in as many games as the 'Quakes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Landon Donovan scored his 13th goal, which is tied with FC Dallas' Kenny Cooper for the lead in Major League Soccer, and Edson Buddle added his 12th goal as L.A. rallied, but Cochrane's late goal helped the Earthquakes snap their eight- game winless streak.

The Earthquakes (4-9-6) hadn't won since June 7 when they defeated the Columbus Crew, 2-0. San Jose is still last in the Western Conference, but is only three points behind the Colorado Rapids.

L.A. (6-8-5) saw its own winless streak reach seven games, which includes four losses. The Galaxy led the Western Conference before their skid, but are still just four points behind first-place Real Salt Lake.

Alvarez, who was just acquired from FC Dallas for allocation money and a first round draft pick, opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Scott Sealy, who is another recently acquired player, and Huckerby set up the goal.

Huckerby had the ball on the left side of the penalty area and passed to Sealy at the top of the box. Sealy tried to make a move to lose a defender and the ball rolled right to Alvarez, who scored inside the right post from 15 yards.

Alvarez had three goals and three assists for Dallas before being traded.

San Jose defender Eric Denton, who scored an own goal in last week's 1-1 draw against Red Bull New York, helped set up Huckerby's goal in the 40th minute.

Huckerby, who used to play in England's Premier League, dribbled the ball into the area from the left side and drilled a shot off the fingertips of Galaxy goalie Steve Cronin and inside the right post. Huckerby scored his first goal for San Jose in last week draw against New York.

Los Angeles' stars combined to cut the deficit in half two minutes later when David Beckham found Donovan with a cross for their team's first goal. Beckham drove a cross in from the right side and Donovan headed into the left side.

Donovan set a single-season career high in goals. He had 12 goals in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Beckham's eighth assist of the season broke a tie with Donovan with the team lead.

L.A., which is the highest-scoring team in the league, tied the match in the 76th minute. Buddle made a nice play outside the area to lose two defenders and then quickly got off a shot to score into the lower left.

Buddle also set his career high in goals. He scored 11 in 2004 for Columbus.

San Jose escaped with the victory thanks to an unlikely hero.

Cochrane, who entered the match with just two career goals and without a single shot in 13 games this season, spoiled L.A.'s comeback. His last goal was also against the Galaxy in September of last season while playing for Houston.

Huckerby's initial shot was knocked down by Cronin and the rebound bounced into the box. Cochrane was in the right place at the right time to bury the ball into the right side of the net with just seconds remaining.

L.A. will try to bounce back on Aug. 14 when it plays Chivas USA.

San Jose has next week off but will try and build on its big win when it hosts the New England Revolution, who lead the Eastern Conference, on Aug. 16.
