Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Fire earned their third clean sheet in a row as well as extending a four-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory over visiting Chivas USA at Toyota Park on Saturday night.
Rookie Patrick Nyarko scored the game's only goal in the 16th minute, his first of the season in his first Major League Soccer start.
Nyarko actually thought he scored the game's first goal a couple minutes earlier. After John Thorrington striped ball away from Chivas USA defender Lawson Vaughn and dribbled through defenders, he played to Nyarko who fired home, but goal was ruled offside.
Minutes later Nyarko fired home the winner when Chris Rolfe recovered a ball after a Chivas USA attempted clearance of a corner kick and forwarded it to Nyarko, who knocked it high over the outstretched hands of Goats' goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
The goal snapped an almost 200 minute scoreless drought for the Fire, who were coming off back-to-back scoreless draws.
With the win the Fire improve to 8-5-5, just four points back of Eastern Conference leaders New England. Chivas USA falls to 6-7-4, but is still just five back of Western leaders Real Salt Lake.
The Fire will aim to gain more ground when they play at New England next Saturday while Chivas USA will be gunning for a win at Kansas City the same day in their next MLS fixture.
