Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Reigning Major League Soccer MVP Luciano Emilio and D.C. United continued their surge up the Eastern Conference table with a dominating 4-1 won over the star-studded Los Angeles Galaxy in front of over 35,000 raucous home fans and a national TV audience on Sunday at RFK Stadium.
Emilio scored two goals and added an assist to lead D.C. to its fourth straight win and extend its unbeaten streak to six games, which propelled the club to third place in the East after starting the season 2-7. Emilio has nine of his 10 goals on the season during the current unbeaten streak.
D.C.'s Jaime Moreno opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal just five minutes in before L.A.'s Edson Buddle scored the Galaxy's only goal of the game in the 26th minute.
Emilio got the game-winner before the break before adding one more in the second half. Marcelo Gallardo also scored for D.C. (7-7-1) in the second half.
Los Angeles stars Landon Donovan and David Beckham were both held without goals in the loss.
The Galaxy (6-5-3) still lead the Western table, but have just a two point lead on Real Salt Lake with a game in hand.
The game started out with United feeding off its home crowd. An early buildup led to the first goal when Moreno played a ball into the L.A. penalty area to Santino Quaranta, who was taken down from behind by the Galaxy's Ante Jazic. Referee Jair Marrufo called the PK which Moreno converted for his sixth goal of season and 37th PK goal in 44 career attempts.
Buddle evened the score a little over 20 minutes later when Donovan played a ball into the box. Buddle out-muscled two defenders and slotted a shot past Zach Wells for his 10th goal of the season, which were all scored in the last seven games.
Emilio gave the home side the lead before the break, heading home a perfect cross from substitute Marc Burch, who came on in the 27th minute to replace Quaranta after an apparent hamstring injury.
After missing on a wide open shot moments before, Gallardo doubled D.C.'s lead after knocking a loose ball from the top of the box past Steve Cronin for his fourth goal of the season at the hour mark. Emilio and Gonzalo Martinez got assists on the play.
Emilio closed out the scoring in the 68th minute when he tapped in pass from Fred, who was sprung behind the defense on the right side by a Gallardo pass.
D.C., which gets an extended break from league play because of its participation in the 2008 SuperLiga, hosts the Houston Dynamo on July 22 in its next MLS match while L.A. hosts Eastern leading New England on Friday.
Game Notes: D.C. midfielder Ben Olsen made his first appearance of the season in the 75th minute after missing extended time due to offseason ankle surgery. ... Buddle and Emilio are now tied for second in the MLS Golden Boot race with 10 goals, one behind Donovan.
