Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - Jon Busch posted his fifth shutout with a little help from the goal frame to lower his miniscule goals against average to 0.85 as the Chicago Fire tied the San Jose Earthquakes, 0-0, on Saturday night in Major League Soccer.
Busch had to make just one save - and was saved by the crossbar and the post in the second half - as counterpart Joe Cannon was a little busier with four saves in his fifth shutout of the season.
Busch and the Fire's defense helped the team end a three-game losing streak but the club is still winless in four straight. The Earthquakes are also winless in four in a row.
Coach Denis Hamlett made a few changes to try and spark the Fire (6-5-2) but in the 16th minute, surprise starter Andy Herron was forced to leave. Herron tried a bicycle kick that forced Cannon to make a save, but he landed on the back of his head and neck.
Chad Barrett was brought on to replace Herron, who was making his first start of the season.
San Jose's first good scoring chance was eight minutes after half when Ramiro Corrales drilled a free kick off the crossbar.
After that missed opportunity, Cannon made sure Chicago wouldn't escape with a win. Cannon tipped Justin Mapp's shot over the crossbar in the 75th minute and made another good save on Chris Rolfe four minutes later.
Ryan Johnson had a shot to give San Jose the win in the 83rd minute but headed high, then Shea Salinas drilled the left post in the closing minutes and Kei Kamara fired wide on the rebound, although Busch did well to get back in goal.
Chicago defender Bakary Soumare helped preserve the draw with a great tackle in the area. He slid in and won the ball to cleanly take the ball away and prevent a great scoring chance for San Jose in the final seconds.
San Jose (3-8-3) settled for its third scoreless draw this season. Chicago tied a home match for the first time this year and for just the second time overall.
The Fire, who haven't scored in their last three games, will try to get back in the win column when they visit the Columbus Crew on July 5. San Jose visits Chivas USA on July 5.
