MLS Game Summary - D.C. at San Jose

Final Score: San Jose 1 - D.C. 3

Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - D.C. United continued its surge up the Eastern Conference table with a 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer action on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium.

With the win, D.C. is unbeaten in four with the last three all being victories. San Jose, on the other hand, is 1-2-1 in its last four.

After the teams battled to a scoreless first half, they combined to score three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with Clyde Simms and Gonzalo Martinez scoring for D.C. around a John Cunliffe goal for San Jose.

Luciano Emilio added a late goal to close out the scoring.

Emilio almost opened the scoring in the first half, but after being sprung in the box by a through-ball, his turning left-footed shot went off the post.

The teams came out firing in the second half with Simms opening the scoring five minutes after the break. After taking a pass from Marcelo Gallardo, Simms unleashed a rocket from distance that deflected off two players before finding the net behind San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

San Jose came right back with the equalizer less than a minute later after a blunder by D.C. goalkeeper Zach Wells. After a cross was played into the box, Wells fumbled it right to Cunliffe, who fired home for his second goal of the season.

Martinez gave D.C. the lead again just four minutes later when he took a pass from Gallardo on the right side of the box, cut inside and fired a shot into the far post side netting for his first MLS goal.

After 'Quakes defender James Riley was ejected for a studs up tackle with seven minutes to play, Emilio added his eighth goal of the season to close out the scoring.

D.C. (6-7-1) will aim to reach the .500 mark when it hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy next Sunday while San Jose (3-8-2) plays at Chicago next Saturday in its next league fixture.
