Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution continued their domination of the Houston Dynamo this season, topping the back-to-back defending Major League Soccer champions 2-0 on Thursday night in Houston.
This win comes after the Revs (8-3-2) won the season opening matchup between the two sides, 3-0, at Gillette Stadium in March.
When asked why he thinks the Revs have the Dynamo's number, New England goalkeeper Matt Reis said, "Because we are [ticked] off at them for always beating us in the final."
Reis, who made five saves in the game, including a penalty kick stop, was referring to the last two MLS Cup championship games in which the Dynamo have topped the Revs.
Thursday's game started with the Dynamo (4-4-5) attacking early, with forward Brian Mullan getting a shot on goal in the first 20 seconds, but Reis made the save.
New England veteran Steve Ralston opened the scoring, however, in the eighth minute when a throw-in was sent to Kheli Dube on the left side of the Houston penalty area. Dube took a touch past defender Patrick Ianni, who over committed on the play, and passed a square ball across the six-yard box to a wide open Ralston, who tapped in for his third goal of the season.
Dube made it 2-0 in the 35th minute when he volleyed a Mauricio Castro corner-kick off Houston goalkeeper Tony Caig's chest and in. Caig looked bad on the play, unable to get his hands up in time to stop the rocket from Dube. It was Dube's fourth goal of the season.
Houston's best chance to beat Reis came 10 minutes from time when forward Franco Caraccio was fouled by defender Michael Parkhurst just inside the 18- yard box. Referee Mark Geiger called a penalty kick, which Stuart Holden took.
Holden took a stutter-step approach, a la Cristiano Ronaldo, but Reis dove to his right to deny Holden and the Dynamo, who were held scoreless for the second time in two games against Reis and the Revs this season.
Reis now is tied atop the league with five clean sheets this season while the Revs are seven points up on second-place Chicago in the Eastern table ahead of the weekend fixtures.
The Revs will aim to continue their impressive six-game unbeaten streak when they host the New York Red Bulls next Wednesday while the Dynamo will look to get back on track when they travel to Colorado to take on the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on June 21 in their next league fixture.
