Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Javier Morales tallied a goal and an assist as Real Salt Lake toppled the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-1 at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday.
Morales missed a penalty kick in the second minute, but atoned for his error in the second half, setting up Robbie Findley's opening goal in the 48th minute before scoring one of his own on the hour mark. Dema Kovalenko notched his first goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute to make it a three-goal game, and San Jose pulled a goal back with six minutes to play through John Cunliffe.
Salt Lake was given a gift in the second minute of the game when a free kick struck the arm of San Jose's Ned Grabavoy inside the box. Morales stepped to the spot, but his kick left something to be desired as it was stopped by goalkeeper Joe Cannon on its way to the lower left corner.
Kenny Deuchar almost put the hosts up 10 minutes before the break, but his glancing header came back off the right post, and Nat Borchers' rebound effort was stopped by Cannon.
Findley entered the match as a substitute right before halftime, and he had an immediate impact on the game, scoring a goal and assisting on another in his first 15 minutes of action.
Morales played a long ball over the top to Findley on the left wing. He then beat a defender and took the ball towards goal. The midfielder pulled up 25 yards from the net and fired a hard shot that snuck inside the post, past a diving Cannon to give RSL a 1-0 lead.
Findley returned the favor in the 60th minute when Morales dashed through the midfield and played a ball to Findley outside the area. The return pass was right there for Morales, who charged into the box and slipped the ball between the legs of Cannon to make it a two-goal game.
The hosts were in firm control at this point, but they kept their foot on the gas and added a third goal in the 73rd minute when Andy Williams was pulled down inside the box by San Jose's Nick Garcia, giving RLS another spot kick.
Kovalenko stepped forward this time and made no mistake, sending Cannon the wrong way and slotting his shot inside the left post.
Cunliffe prevented the clean sheet in the 84th minute, but it was little consolation for the 'Quakes, who remain at the bottom of the Western Conference.
