Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Reigning Major League Soccer MVP Luciano Emilio scored the game winner to end a seven-game scoring drought and help D.C. United snap a four-game losing streak Saturday with a 3-2 win over Toronto FC.
Emilio, who led MLS with 20 goals last season, scored in the 72nd minute, less than 90 seconds after Jaime Moreno tied the match by increasing his own league record to 116 career goals.
D.C. (3-7-0), which also got a goal from defender Gonzalo Peralta, won for just the third time this season. Toronto (4-3-2) had its franchise record six-match unbeaten streak snapped.
Danny Dichio, who scored the lone goal in Wednesday's 1-0 win over D.C., scored both goals for Toronto FC.
Emilio stole the spotlight, though, with just his second goal of the season.
The Brazilian forward hadn't scored since April 5 when D.C. beat Toronto 4-1 in the teams' first meeting of the season.
He was a little lucky Saturday, running onto a rebound to poke home the winner. But the goal was exactly what struggling United - and Emilio - needed.
Toronto FC goalie Greg Sutton, who posted his third shutout in four matches in Wednesday's victory, spilled a rebound on shot from Santino Quaranta and Emilio beat him to the loose ball to score.
United survived a few scary moments in stoppage time, which included a near own goal by Peralta and a clearance off the line by the goal-scoring defender.
Dichio, who scored seven minutes into Wednesday's game, handed Toronto the lead just 13 minutes into the second leg of the home-and-home series. He got enough separation from Peralta at the top of the penalty area to run onto a cross from captain Jim Brennan and scored off a header from just a few yards out.
D.C. leveled the game late in the first half when central defenders Peralta and Devon McTavish combined on United's first goal on a set piece this year. Moreno delivered the corner kick that McTavish met at the near post with a header. The ball sailed to the far post, where Peralta got low to score off a header.
United deserved the goal - which snapped TFC's 272-minute shutout streak - but the surprising Canadian club was back in front before halftime.
Dichio did a lot of work just to set up his second goal, making a crucial pass in midfield to Amado Guevara. The former MLS MVP returned the favor with a pass back to Dichio at the top of the area. The English striker hammered a shot into the lower left for his fourth goal of the season.
D.C. continued to control the match early in the second half - despite being a goal down - and finally broke through in the 70th minute on a penalty kick from Moreno. The goal came three minutes after he had a goal wiped out for offside.
Quaranta drew the penalty deep in the left side of the area when he was shoved from behind by Marvell Wynne. Referee Terry Vaughn immediately pointed for a PK and Moreno buried the ball into the lower right with Sutton going the opposite way.
Moreno's fourth goal of the season - his third on a PK - set up Emilio's match winner just 81 seconds later. Quaranta's blast rebounded off Sutton's hands and into space in the middle of the area.
With white smoke from a flare thrown from the crowd billowing up in the middle of the field, Emilio poked the ball under a diving Sutton for the game winner.
D.C. will try to build on its win Thursday night at the New England Revolution. Toronto will try to bounce back when the Los Angeles Galaxy visit BMO Field on April 31.
