East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes did an excellent job shutting down New York Red Bulls star forward Jozy Altidore for the majority of Sunday's Major League Soccer contest at Giants Stadium.
"I think they tried to frustrate him and they were doing a good job at it," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.
Unfortunately for the expansion club, the 18-year-old had an opportunity late in the second half and used it to draw a penalty kick, which Mike Magee buried for the game winner in a 2-0 Red Bulls victory.
"It was very fresh to see that open up and (John) Wolyneic played a superb ball to space and I went at the guy," Altidore said. "Luckily for me he made a mistake we got the PK and got our first goal of the game."
Altidore added another goal five minutes into stoppage time to seal the victory, New York's second of the season.
"It was disappointing in the end, the goal at the end was kind of icing on the cake for them and it was a kind of a kick in our ... you know, whatever," Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop said.
The 'Quakes controlled possession for much of the first half but struggled to adjust to the artificial turf and failed to generate any legitimate scoring opportunities.
"It was a bit of an off day for us. We struggled to get to grips with the game and, I'm not going to blame the field, but it's never easy to play on it," Yallop said. "Especially when a team is high pressuring you like New York did. The first half at times we did a good job of stopping their play as well."
The Red Bulls finally came to life after the half hour mark, generating a couple scoring chances. Captain Claudio Reyna came inches form collecting his first MLS goal in his second season in the league when he took a pass in the box behind the defense and touched a shot past San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon. But defender Nick Garcia cleared the ball off the line and the game remained scoreless.
The Earthquakes finally got their first shot on goal in first half stoppage time when Ivan Guerrero took control of the ball about 25 yards out and fired against the grain, but the chance was easily saved by New York goalkeeper Jon Conway
Reyna had his second scoring opportunity for New York about five minutes after the break when he headed a Dave Van den Bergh corner kick over the bar.
"Again, I think that as I have stated before, a healthy Claudio is a very influential player," Osorio said.
Altidore earned the penalty kick when he was taken down at the top of the area in the 78th minute.
"When you are in good positions you can defend against him," Yallop said of Altidore. "As soon as you get pulled out in a position where you aren't, he's dangerous. We kind of lost the ball in the middle of the field and were a little bit stretched, they play a ball early to him and then we were on our heels and then we are in a little bit of trouble.
"I haven't seen whether it was a penalty or not, but once you get him running at you, he is dangerous."
Magee took the kick and fired past Cannon for the 1-0 lead. It was Magee's first goal for New York since July of '06.
In the closing minutes, Garcia cleared another ball off the line after Wolyneic headed past Cannon from the top of the box but that only delayed the inevitable.
In the 95th minute. Altidore placed a perfect shot off the near post after being set up by Wolyneic.
"This team is not based on one man's performance," Altidore said. "We have a lot of combinations that help us win games like this. I'm very proud of these guys and I look forward to more victories like this in the future."
The Red Bulls will be back in action Thursday at Toronto FC while San Jose hosts FC Dallas its next league fixture Saturday.
GAME NOTES: New York striker Juan Pablo Angel was not available for selection due to a hamstring injury. ... New York striker Oscar Echeverry was also out with LCL sprain suffered in training on Tuesday. ... Red Bulls defender Kevin Goldthwaite left the game with a back strain in the 75th minute; he was replaced by Carlos Mendes. ... The Earthquakes' Peguero Jean Phillipe, who just joined the team this week, came on in the second half and contributed 23 minutes to his new squad. "We didn't get him the ball enough," Yallop said. "I thought we should have played the ball as early as we could just to give him a chance to get around defenders. He did OK. He looked quite lively when he came on. He doesn't know the players, he only trained with us three or four days, so he'll get used to the guys. But he looked lively."
