Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - Jack Jewsbury scored in the fourth minute, rookie defender Chance Myers deflected a sure goal off the line early in the second half and the Kansas City Wizards shutout the Chicago Fire, 1-0, to move into first place in the Eastern Conference on Sunday.

Jewsbury's second goal of the season and the key save by Myers, the No. 1 pick in this year's Major League Soccer draft, helped the Wizards win for the third time in their first five games.

Goalie Kevin Hartman made five saves to post his third shutout this season and help K.C. (3-1-1) knock Chicago (2-1-1) from the unbeaten ranks.

Chicago allowed just its second goal of the season - the first was an own goal - and failed to score for the first time.

Kansas City, which tied the Houston Dynamo 0-0 in its last match, grabbed the edge when Jewsbury scored in less than four minutes against Chicago.

Michael Harrington, who picked up his second assist of the season, started the play by sending a pass to Claudio Lopez on the left side of the penalty area.

Lopez passed to Jewsbury near the top of the area and he chested the ball down to himself and drilled a shot past Fire goalie Jon Busch.

The Fire should have tied the score just before half, but striker Chad Barrett missed an open net when he got under a shot from just a few yards out and put it well over the goal.

Chicago opened the second half with another strong scoring chance that started with Tomasz Frankowski's initial shot being deflected back into the area. With both teams scrambling to gain possession, Chicago's Cuauhtemoc Blanco was able to sneak a shot past Hartman, but Myers was on the line to clear the ball.

Kansas City had a few chances to extend its lead later in the second half, but Sasha Victorine's header was saved with 25 minutes left, Tyson Wahl drilled a shot off the post, Myers missed an opener header and Ivan Trujillio had a shot saved by Busch.

The Fire continued to pressure for the tying goal, but couldn't find a way to solve the Wizards' defense.

Chicago's last hope was on a shot from Calen Carr in the 94th minute that was initially saved by Hartman at the right post and, despite spilling a rebound, he eventually kicked the ball out of danger while on his back.

Kansas City will try to continue its hot start when its visits Toronto FC on April 26. Chicago will try to rebound April 26 when it hosts Colorado.
