Toronto (7-8-4) at New York (6-6-7)
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - When the New York Red Bulls host Toronto FC in a Major League Soccer match at Giants Stadium on Sunday, it will be a match that very well could mean the difference between qualifying for the MLS Cup playoffs and sitting at home come October.
While both teams will have 10 games left after Sunday, they are currently tied at 25 points after 19 league fixtures - along with two other teams - at the bottom of the Eastern Conference table.
The top three teams in the each conference table automatically qualify, while two wild cards are available for everyone else. Currently, seven teams have a legitimate shot at the last two spots, making every game in the final third of the regular season magnified.
The Red Bulls (6-6-7) are coming off a vital win last week vs. D.C. United - another team they are battling for a playoff spot. Being the home team on Sunday, it is almost imperative that the Red Bulls get a positive result.
Juan Pablo Angel was the star in the game, scoring two goals, with Mike Magee getting the game winner just before the first half break.
"I spoke to Mike this week, I told him the importance of playing as a second striker is getting involved and I think that's what he did," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.
"One of the things Mike has is that he has goals in him," Angel said. "If you give him chances in the area and he finds himself in a good position, he can put the ball away easily. I think for him, for his confidence, the goal is going to be very important."
The Red Bulls lineup has been revamped in recent weeks, with Gabriel Cichero making his debut in the back three last week while Venezuelan international Jorge Rojas, who has three assists in three starts, and Juan Pietravallo have also been added to the mix.
"We said we wanted somebody that could organize the back, he did that and he also showed some very good distribution, which we have lacked in the past," Osorio said of Cichero. "He was very committed, very good on the ball."
"I said from the beginning that [the newcomers] are going to be very important players for us," Angel said. "The more they play, the more confident they will get and the more important they'll become. We cannot ask for them to do everything. They have introduced themselves very well to the team. We have welcomed them with open arms and hopefully they will be as important as everyone thinks they're going to be."
Toronto (7-8-4) is also confident after a 1-0 win at Colorado last week that snapped its own six-game winless streak.
"We were up against it before the game; we have not made too much of about it and we've just gone on with the job," TFC coach John Carver. "The young guys have stepped in there and I'm proud of them. They've done a great job for Toronto and I hope everyone back in Canada and Toronto in particular are very proud of them, because I am."
