Chivas USA (6-6-4) at Chicago (7-5-5), 8:30 p.m.
Bridgeview, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Fire and Chivas USA square off at Toyota Park on Saturday with both clubs entering new eras.
The Fire just completed a trade that will bring U.S. national team and English Premier League veteran Brian McBride into the fold at the conclusion of the Olympics, where he is one of the U.S. team's three over-age players.
"Brian is one of the greatest strikers in American history and we are thrilled to have him be a part of our team," Fire technical director Frank Klopas said. "His career speaks for itself and we are looking for him to be an instant contributor to our club."
"I am excited to be joining the Chicago Fire for many reasons," McBride said. "One of the most important of those is Chicago is my hometown. I have a great desire to win championships and hope to do so with the Fire. I am definitely looking forward to my future with the Fire."
Chivas USA just announced that reigning goalkeeper of the year Brad Guzan's move to Aston Villa of the EPL has also been completed with his work permit being approved on Friday by the United Kingdom's Home Office.
"Brad was the first goalkeeper to defend the colors of Chivas USA in Major League Soccer," Chivas USA President and CEO Shawn Hunter said. "This organization has seen him grow from a 20-year-old rookie to a U.S. Olympian, the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and now a member of one of England's great clubs. We trust that Villa supporters will soon see what Chivas USA fans have known for some time: that this is a very special young man with the potential of becoming one of the great goalkeepers in the international game."
"It is an honor for Chivas USA to see its one of its players transfer to one of England's storied clubs," Chivas USA coach Preki said. "Although Brad will be missed, we are very happy for him and wish him luck with the challenges ahead."
Both moves will be on the minds of most of the players on Saturday and will greatly affect the clubs the rest of the season. Both teams will have to find a way to put the news in the back of their heads, however, in an effort to gain valuable points.
The Fire (7-5-5) are currently third in the Eastern table, but have just one win in their last eight Major League Soccer fixtures. The team will have to find a way to get in the win column on Saturday without leading scorer Chad Barrett, who was shipped to Toronto for the rights to McBride, as well as Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Diego Gutierrez, who will be serving suspensions for yellow card accumulation.
Chivas USA is in fourth in the Western table, but hasn't played a league match since a 1-1 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy on July 10 because of its participation in the 2008 SuperLiga. The Goats are currently just five points back of conference leaders Real Salt Lake with three games in hand.
Lance Parker and Dan Kennedy are currently the only goalkeepers on the roster after Guzan's transfer, with Kennedy filling in during the SuperLiga fixtures as the starter.
Also, Roberto Nurse has been added to the mix of attackers with Ante Razov, Maykel Galindo, Alecko Eskandarian and Justin Braun all doubtful with injuries, and Sacha Kljestan and Jorge Flores with the U.S. Olympic team.
"It's going to be interesting. Possibly the ones who are in better form will get the starting spot," Nurse said. "But it's all up to me and how hard I work. That's how you achieve success. Nothing is impossible. I know I can accomplish it. I'm here for a reason and I believe I've got a good opportunity here."
