Los Angeles Galaxy (6-4-3) at D.C. United (6-7-1), noon
Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - When the Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United square off at RFK Stadium in a Major League Soccer clash on Sunday, half of the league's 12 championships will be on the field.
United is the only four-time winner while L.A. has two MLS Cup trophies to its credit, making the match more than just an East Coast vs. West Coast battle.
The two teams are in similar form, with United recovering from a horrid start to the campaign by rattling off three straight wins and a five-game unbeaten streak.
The resurgence of reigning league MVP Luciano Emilio has coincided with United climbing out of the Easter Conference basement. United has played a methodical possession style while getting quality chances from its skilled players to outpace teams during its current streak.
The Galaxy (6-4-3), on the other hand, have ben pretty consistent all season, scoring goals at will while allowing a league-high 24 in 13 fixtures. Their run-and-gun style, which has also produced a league-high 31 goals and has propelled the team to the top spot in the Western table, will be a sharp contrast to D.C.'s.
"They're playing well right now and they have some good attacking options," United's Clyde Simms of L.A.. "It's going to be a day game, it's going to be hot. I think the key will be to keep the ball ... we do that and it's going to be a tough one - you waste a lot more energy defending than attacking, so if we keep the ball and make them run around a little bit, make their attacking options a little tired, then I think we can do well."
United (6-7-1) will be hard pressed to earn its first shutout of the season against the high powered L.A. attack that features the league's top two goal scorers in Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, not to mention winger David Beckham.
"As long as we're winning, as long as it's not costing the team, it's always a benefit," D.C. defender Devon McTavish said of his side's inability to keep a clean sheet this season. "But we still need to get that shutout. We still need to keep them from getting in the back of our net, because when it comes to crunch time you're not going to be able to win 3-2. You're going to have win 1-0, 2-0. We still need to fix that."
