Colorado (5-7-1) at Columbus (7-4-2), 7:30 p.m.
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew will aim to continue their return to form when they return home to take on the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer action on Saturday.
The Crew went 1-0-1 on a two-game road trip that snapped a four-game winless streak in which the team was held scoreless in all four fixtures. Columbus has rebounded to score six goals in it's last two contests and will aim to continue that surge in the friendly confines of Crew Stadium.
The Rapids, on the other hand, will be looking to win their first league match away from Dick's Sporting Goods Park since an April 12 victory at New England.
The Rapids were able to muster a point at home last Saturday in a scoreless draw with Houston, but they still haven't been able to earn a victory in their last three matches, a streak that has dropped them from first to sixth in the Western table.
"I think that we had five or six good chances. We played well, we defended well, we created chances, but you are never going to win a game if you cannot score a goal," Rapids coach Fernando Clavijo said.
The Crew are coming off an exciting 3-3 draw at the Los Angeles Galaxy this past weekend. The team came back from a 2-0 deficit and a late 3-2 deficit to earn the valuable road point.
"The thing we've talked about all week was ... that we were going to get chances, we were going to get opportunities to score," Crew coach Sigi Schmid said. "I told them that I was confident we're going to get goals, that there was no doubt in my mind that we were going to score. It's just a question of how much you keep them off the board."
Limiting L.A. to three goals doesn't sound like much of an accomplishment, but the fact that the Crew were able to turn up their offensive intensity to match the output is.
"Last year we didn't believe we were going to survive the game, as a team, so we didn't get it done the last 10 minutes of the game," Crew veteran Frankie Hejduk said. "In the preseason we made it a big issue that we've got to stop taking goals the last 10 minutes. If we do give some up, we've got to score some. We've taken that mentality this year. We've had some goals scored on us still in the last minutes this year but we've also scored a couple in the last minutes. We've come back in games, unlike last year."
Another motivating factor for the Crew in the game is a victory, coupled with a New England loss or tie against Toronto on Saturday, will earn Schmid the honor of leading the MLS All-Star's against the English Premier League's West Ham United on July 24 in Toronto.
