Dallas (4-5-4) at New York (4-4-4), 7:30 p.m.
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - FC Dallas will start a new era when it travels to New Jersey to take on the New York Red Bulls on Saturday when head coach Schellas Hyndman will be making his Major League Soccer debut.
"I've been a great fan [of this club] for all these years and don't think I have ever missed a game either on TV or in person," Hyndman said. "This team is outstanding with the talent that they have and they play the type of soccer that I believe in, which is more of a possession style and quality control style."
Former Hoops coach Steve Morrow has been replaced by assistant Marco Ferruzzi on an interim basis since mid-May when he was fired, with Ferruzzi leading the club to a 2-2-1 record. Hyndman kept Ferruzzi on his staff as well as adding Drew Keeshan and John Ellinger.
The Red Bulls made news this week as well, almost earning their first win in New England since 2002 on Wednesday. But a Steve Ralston equalizer in the closing minutes forced New York to split the points on the road in a 1-1 draw.
"I am very pleased with the way we carried our plan," Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "I think the guys in the middle, forced them to push inside and I think we, in general, denied a very good chance, allowed very few chances and I am pleased with that."
The Red Bulls defense will have to be on its toes to shut down Hoops' forward Kenny Cooper, who has been terrorizing teams this season. Cooper scored one of his seven goals on the season against the Red Bulls in a 2-0 win in Texas in the two teams' other meeting this season.
Dallas, which ended a three game losing streak last week by topping the Chicago Fire 1-0, will probably make some tactical changes under the new staff, namely switching from a three-man backline to four.
"I think, watching this team closely, they may find more success in a 4-4-2," Hyndman said. "I'm a strong believer in a 4-4-2 because of the width of the field, 75 yards; you have four people covering the defense instead of three. I think they played well, but sometimes they gave up soft goals, and that could be because they don't have enough people back there."
That will be a tough chore on Saturday, considering two of the Hoops' starting defenders - Drew Moor and Adrian Serioux - will be absent on international duty.
Regardless of the formation, Hyndman will be evaluating players in an effort to decide what changes, if any, need to be made to the roster in the near future.
"I think right now there are three roster spots open, so we'll be looking for players to fill those spots," Hyndman said. "I think this is a very good team. There are outstanding players on this team who are capable of continuing to find success like they did on Sunday [in the win over Chicago] in ungodly temperatures."
