MLS Preview from The Sports Network

New York (4-4-3) at New England (8-3-2), 7:30 p.m.

Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - When the New England Revolution and the New York Red Bulls square off for a mid-week Major League Soccer fixture on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium, it will be their second and final meeting of the 2008 regular season. It will mark the first time in the history of MLS that the Eastern Conference rivals haven't played at least three games in a single regular season.

The first meeting this season, which was on April 19 at Giants Stadium, saw the teams battle to a 1-1 draw despite the fact that the Revs played down a man for most of the second half. The draw helped New England extend its regular season unbeaten run against the Red Bulls to nine games (6-0-3) dating back to 2005.

The Revs are coming off a 2-0 win at Houston last week in which arguably the top goalkeeper in the league this season - Matt Reis - and forward Kheli Dube, with a goal and an assist, led the club to victory. The win extended the Revs' current unbeaten streak to six games, enough to push the club to the top spot in the Eastern table.

"We've done it in a not very glamorous fashion," Reis said. "We've been effective at times. We've had timely goals. We've played very well on the road. I don't think anyone is going to take the tape of the game and put it up as one of the best-played soccer games, but we're effective on the road. We won, 2-0, away from home and we're very happy with that."

The Red Bulls, on the other hand, got shellacked in every phase of their game at D.C. United on Saturday night, losing 4-1 behind a Luciano Emilio hat trick.

"Until the first goal, it was basically a very even game," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said. "Then we just decided to go forward. We had no organization. They counter-attacked and with four passes they go through our defense and it's a goal. I am very disappointed with our defense. We allowed open shots on goal. On the night, we lost against a better team. We failed to keep possession and hopefully we will improve."

"This is over. We need to see what players are available for Wednesday. Try to put a decent team that is willing to compete and hopefully get a result in Boston," Osorio added.

The Red Bulls will be shorthanded once again, with its two designated players, midfielder Claudio Reyna and forward Juan Pablo Angel listed as questionable with injuries.

"A lot of the stuff he's been dealing with in the higher part of his hamstring from his back is starting to dissipate," Red Bulls athletic trainer Rick Guter said of Angel. "But he still has a little bit of a lingering thing at the bottom [of his hamstring]. He's up to running, so that's a good sign. Hopefully this little bit of rest period will help him get over the hump."

The Revolution will be without forward Kenny Mansally and midfielder Khano Smith because of their participation with their respective national teams in World Cup qualifying. Forward Taylor Twellman is also listed as doubtful with an ankle injury.
