MLS Preview from The Sports Network

San Jose (2-6-1) at Columbus (6-3-1), 7:30 p.m.

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes travel to take on the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium on Saturday night with some controversy surrounding the home side.

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber issued two statements this week about the last game at Crew Stadium, which saw Columbus fall 1-0 to New England.

After Revs forward Kheli Dube scored the game-winning goal, Crew fans apparently berated him with racial slurs and threw objects onto the field.

"MLS and the Columbus Crew have extensively reviewed an incident that took place during the Crew vs. Revolution game on May 24 where there is audio of a spectator at Crew Stadium using vulgar language and an unacceptable and offensive racial epithet," Garber said in a statement.

"During that game, objects were thrown onto the field by spectators on a number of occasions, in some cases striking players on the field of play. A number of fans were ejected by security staff as a result of these actions," Garber said in a statement released on Friday.

As a result, Crew Stadium and all other MLS facilities will have to review their security measures and the use of streamers while the opposition is taking corner kicks will be monitored.

"While the spontaneous use of streamers and confetti as an expression of fan enthusiasm will not be prohibited, the continued practice will be kept under review," the league said. "Should issues continue regarding the use of streamers, MLS will have no option but to prohibit streamers."

As far as the game, the Crew will be looking to rebound from their second straight loss and a three game winless streak that has seen the team go scoreless after winning five games in a row.

"We want to get back to our winning ways," Crew defender Ezra Hendrickson said. "We're not going to hang our heads. It's been a difficult last few games but we're still very confident. You're going to have success and failures and the key is to bounce back."

The team will have to do that without one of its starting defenders, Danny O'Rourke, who received a red card in the team's last game, a loss at Chivas USA.

Veteran Frankie Hejduk could also miss the game because of his participation with the U.S. national team in a friendly vs. Argentina at Giants Stadium on Sunday.

The key for the Crew will be to find a way to break their three-game goalless drought.

"Goals come and go but as long as we stick to what we know we're successful at and we continue to be organized we'll be able to put the ball in the back of the net," Crew forward Alejandro Moreno said. "We'll look to do that against San Jose [on Saturday]."

The 'Quakes are coming off a tough loss to Real Salt lake that further entrenched them in last place in not only the Western Conference table, but the entire league.

"We did well in the first half and came into halftime nil-nil, which away from home is what you try to do. Obviously a goal would've been good but we didn't even really look like scoring the first half," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said after the loss. "It's just disappointing the goals that went in ... It's always a little difficult to figure out."
