MLS Preview from The Sports Network

D.C. United (2-6-0) at Toronto FC (3-2-2), 7:30 p.m.

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto FC ended the Columbus Crew's five-game win streak Saturday with a 0-0 tie, but coach John Carver was pleased that his team wasn't.

"The pleasing thing is," Carver said, "they're all sitting in there very, very disappointed."

Toronto played well enough to beat the Crew, who have the best record in Major League Soccer, but still extended its unbeaten stretch to a club-record five games with the draw.

"It's unfortunate we didn't capitalize and we ended up not getting the full three points, which I believe we deserved," TFC defender Marvell Wynne said.

Veteran striker Danny Dichio also wanted the win, of course, but said, "we've got to give ourselves a little pat on the back."

Toronto, which had the worst record in MLS last year, has been on a roll since losing its first two games this season - to Columbus and D.C. United.

TFC has a chance to avenge one of those losses this week. Toronto hosts United on Wednesday night in the first game of a home and away series. Toronto visits D.C. on Saturday.

Toronto has never beaten D.C., losing the teams' first meeting this year 4-1. But TFC is unbeaten in six straight at BMO Field and United is stuck in one of the franchise's worst slumps.

D.C.'s struggles hit a new low Saturday night when it blew a one-goal edge in the second half against Chivas USA, allowing three quick goals in a 3-1 loss.

"We just didn't do a good enough job over 90 minutes." United coach Tom Soehn said.

Since United beat Toronto in the team's second game of the season, it has lost five of its six matches. United has been shutout in three of those losses and scored just one goal in the other two.

Luciano Emilio, who was named MLS MVP last season after scoring 20 goals, has just one goal. He didn't start last week and didn't contribute after he was in the game as a substitute.

With Emilio - and the entire offense - struggling, not to mention a defense in shambles (14 goals allowed in their last six games), Soehn admitted after the team's most recent loss that "we're going to evaluate everything."

United's defense was without center back Gonzalo Peralta against Chivas and he is questionable to play Wednesday because of personal reasons. Domenic Mediate filled in on defense and Ryan Cordeiro made his league debut in midfield for a team also trying to overcome injuries, most specifically to Ben Olsen.

Toronto has had its problems scoring as well (eight goals in seven games), but it has posted three shutouts in its last three games with a defense that's led by Jim Brennan, Tyrone Marshall, Marco Velez and Wynne - who have started all of Toronto's games this season.

"We just didn't have that final piece of the jigsaw (Saturday) and couldn't put it in the net," Dichio said.
