Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby scored twice, as the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Adam Hall also tallied for the Penguins, who are in the finals for the first time since winning the second of back-to-back titles in 1992. Marian Hossa collected two assists for Pittsburgh, which is 9-0 at home in the playoffs and 17-0 at Mellon Arena since a 2-1 shootout loss to San Jose on February 24th.
Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 32-of-34 shots to earn the win.
Johan Franzen and Mikael Samuelsson scored for the Red Wings, who still lead the best-of-seven series, 2-1. Chris Osgood allowed three goals on 24 shots in defeat.
"I thought we were able to create some chances even though they (Penguins) had home ice advantage," Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "I think we had too many turnovers that they were able to capitalize on."
Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
Hall provided some much-needed insurance at the 7:18 mark of the third, banking the puck off the backside of a scrambling Osgood to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead.
Less than a minute later, Detroit's Tomas Holmstrom was staring at an empty net, but his shot rang off the near post.
Samuelsson made it a one-goal game with 6:23 remaining, snapping a wrister from the top of the right circle over the left shoulder of Fleury.
With 4:18 to go in regulation, Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin was whistled for hooking, but Detroit couldn't muster any quality scoring chances.
The Penguins survived a late push from the Red Wings with Osgood on the bench to get back into the series.
"It feels good," Crosby said of the win. "I mean we definitely earned it, but at the same time it's only one (game)."
The Penguins started the second period on a power play thanks to Brian Rafalski's tripping penalty with 41 seconds left in the first.
At the 2:02 mark of the second period, Detroit's Niklas Kronwall was whistled for a hooking infraction and it didn't take the Penguins long to find the back of the net.
Malkin handed the puck off to the point for Sergei Gonchar, who just fired it on net. Ryan Malone and Hossa were banging away at the disc in the slot. Osgood made a pad save on Hossa, but the puck bounced to Crosby at the right side of the net and he put it in behind the Detroit netminder 32 seconds into the man advantage.
The Red Wings made it a 2-1 game on the power play. As defenseman Hal Gill stewed in the box, Franzen carried the puck into the offensive zone, stickhandled around Pittsburgh defenseman Rob Scuderi, took the puck hard to the net and chipped it over the right pad of Fleury with 5:12 remaining.
In all, Osgood turned aside 12 shots in the middle stanza, while Fleury made eight saves.
After being blanked in the first two games of the finals, Pittsburgh finally lit the lamp with 2:35 remaining in the first period. Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart looked to start a rush from his own zone, but his pass went off the skate of teammate Henrik Zetterberg.
Crosby gathered the puck and dropped it to Hossa, whose quick shot from the left circle was slowed by Stuart. The youngest captain in NHL history, Crosby, drove hard to the net, collected the loose puck and slipped it between the pads of Osgood, snapping his shutout streak at 154:58.
Fleury stopped all nine shots he faced in the opening 20 minutes, while Osgood made five saves.
The Penguins were awarded a power play 64 seconds into the game, as Franzen was sent off for holding. Malone had pair of excellent scoring chances for Pittsburgh on the man advantage. He wove around the Red Wings defense, but his wrister sailed wide of the far post. Shorty after that missed opportunity, Osgood made a point-blank save on Malone in the slot.
Just as the power play expired, Pittsburgh's Jordan Staal was assessed a holding minor, but Detroit failed to convert.
With 7:53 to play before the first intermission, the Red Wings got another power play as Gonchar was called for hooking, but Pittsburgh killed it off.
