NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at NY Rangers

Final Score: Pittsburgh 0 - NY Rangers 3

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 29 shots he faced for his second career postseason shutout to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series at Madison Square Garden.

Jaromir Jagr scored twice and assisted on Brandon Dubinsky's goal for the Rangers, who staved off elimination and now trail 3-1 in the series. Lundqvist was especially sharp late in the second period, when he stopped two breakaways, one of which was a penalty shot by Hart Trophy finalist Evgeni Malkin. Lundqvist improved his career playoff record to 11-11.

"Our special teams were very important to us tonight," said Rangers head coach Tom Renney. "Henrik was obviously terrific. From the goaltender out, I thought we were solid. We can even get better, and I think we will."

Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two goals on 33 shots for the Penguins, who will attempt to clinch the series when they host Game 5 on Sunday afternoon. Pittsburgh is one of two franchises in league history to lose a series after holding a 3-0 lead. In 1975, the Penguins lost in that fashion to the New York Islanders.

"I think you expect every playoff game to be tough," said Sidney Crosby. "I think tonight they played desperate. We had chances, but didn't connect on a few."

Following a scoreless first period, the Rangers grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 12:45 mark of the second on Jagr's fourth goal of the postseason. Dubinsky held along the right side of the neutral zone near the half-wall and sent a cross-ice pass for Jagr, who corralled the puck and streaked down the left-wing side.

Once he reached the circle, Jagr stickhandled in front of Pittsburgh's Sergei Gonchar and used him as a partial screen to beat Fleury with a low wrist shot.

After Jagr released the shot, he was leveled by Pens defenseman Brooks Orpik and was momentarily motionless on the ice before he was helped back to the bench. Jagr did not miss a shift.

The remainder of the second period belonged to Lundqvist, who stopped two breakaway attempts within a two-plus minute span. First, with 4:22 to play, Ryan Malone gained a clear break while the Pens were short-handed, but Lundqvist made a nice pad save.

Shortly after, the Pens had a golden opportunity to tie it up when Malkin was awarded a penalty shot. After he received a perfect lead pass and skated in all alone, he tried to fire a wrist shot from near the top of the crease but New York defenseman Dan Girardi -- who did not have a stick -- pushed him down from behind and Malkin slid into the net along with the puck.

A penalty shot was immediately called by referee Kevin Pollock, but before the attempt occurred the play was reviewed to determine if the puck had actually crossed the goal line before the net came off its moorings when Malkin crashed into it.

The play was eventually ruled no-goal and the penalty shot ensued. Malkin skated very deliberately down the slot, did not even attempt to deke and released a wrist shot that Lundqvist easily snagged with his glove.

New York made it 2-0 with a power-play goal only 44 seconds into the final period.

Pittsburgh forward Petr Sykora was whistled for hooking inside the final minute of the second stanza and the minor carried over into the third. New York quickly set up in its offensive zone and Martin Straka held control along the rear boards. He mustered a pass to Dubinsky, who was stationed at the base of the right circle. From a sharp angle and with traffic in front, Dubinsky fired a blind turnaround wrist shot that Fleury had trouble seeing and the disc slid into the back of the cage for his fourth goal of the postseason.

Lundqvist made 12 saves in the third. The best scoring chance for the Penguins occurred with nearly seven minutes remaining when Malkin was all alone in the left slot, but his blazing one-timer was turned aside.

"When you are more aggressive and play more confident, you find the puck," said Lundqvist. "Hopefully we got them thinking over there."

The Rangers defense corps held strong throughout the remainder of regulation and Jagr's empty-netter in the waning seconds capped the scoring.

"Like I said, it's not easy to close out a series," said Jagr. "We have to win four games. No matter if it's 3-0 or 3-1. Nobody gives us a chance, but the chance is still there."
