NHL Game Summary - Washington at Philadelphia

Final Score: Washington 4 - Philadelphia 2

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Alexander Ovechkin scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner, as the Washington Capitals downed the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-2, in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal at the Wachovia Center.

Ovechkin, who had been limited to just one goal and four assists in the series coming into the game, came alive in the third period as he scored on a breakaway and the power play to help the Capitals force a deciding Game 7 set to take place in Washington on Tuesday.

"The stars, it seems to happen around them, whether it's John Elway and 'The Drive' or great baseball players getting the last at-bat," said Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau about Ovechkin. "He was getting frustrated because they did such a good job on him, but he persevered and came through."

Alexander Semin had a goal and an assist while Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals, who are looking to rally from a three games to one deficit against the Flyers for a second time. In 1988, Washington was trailing, 3-1, before winning the final three games to shock Philadelphia in the 1988 Patrick Division semifinals.

Cristobal Huet stopped 33 shots in the win for Washington, which is looking for its first playoff-series victory since defeating Buffalo in the 1998 Eastern Conference finals.

Mike Richards and Danny Briere each had a goal for the Flyers, who have not won a playoff series since beating Toronto in the 2004 Eastern Conference semifinals. Martin Biron made 36 saves in the loss.

"The second period just went right off page," said Philadelphia coach John Stevens. "We turned pucks over, didn't get puck all the way in. They are a great transition team and when you don't get pucks in, then you are doing them a favor, and we were doing them a big favor at the end there."

Washington had rallied from a two-goal deficit in the second period to tie the game and grabbed the lead just 2:46 into the third. With Philadelphia controlling the puck in the Washington end, Kimmo Timonen attempted a point- to-point pass that Ovechkin tipped, allowing Viktor Kozlov to nab the puck. Kozlov sprung Ovechkin on a clean breakaway and the Russian skated down the ice and deked to the forehand before lifting the puck into the right corner of the net for a 3-2 lead.

The Flyers had a 5-on-3 opportunity a bit later in the game, but despite several strong scoring chances, were unable to tie the contest.

The Capitals were awarded a power play when Philadelphia was called for too many men on the ice and the team took advantage of the gift for a 4-2 lead. A weak clearing attempt resulted in the puck going to Brooks Laich, who fired a cross-ice pass from the right boards to the left circle where Ovechkin one- timed it past Biron.

The Flyers were unable to get any pressure in the Washington end as the Capitals played keep-away for the most part to skate out of Philadelphia with the victory.

Philadelphia got the first power play opportunity of the game when Matt Bradley got called for interference at the 2:59 mark of the first period and the team used the advantage to take the lead. Timonen blasted a shot from the high slot that missed the net, but it caromed off the endboards and went to the right side where Richards buried it for a 1-0 lead at the 3:49 mark.

Biron made 12 saves in the first period, including a sliding pad save on a low one-timer from Ovechkin in front of the net with under 11 minutes to play, and helped kill two Washington power plays to keep the Capitals off of the scoreboard.

The Flyers again used the power play to take a 2-0 lead in the second period. Vinny Prospal found himself with the puck along the deep left boards and sent it out to the left circle where Briere ripped a shot over the left shoulder of Huet at the 1:18 mark of the frame.

However, the Capitals scored the next two goals in the second to tie the game heading into the third.

A bit less than halfway through the frame, the Flyers got caught up-ice and Washington skated down to the Philadelphia end on a 3-on-2 break. Laich skated through the neutral zone and dished it off to Semin at the right point. Semin sent it over to Backstrom, who dished it back over to Semin before Semin sent the puck back to Backstrom for a one-timer past Biron at the 9:34 mark.

Washington took control of the game over the final five minutes of the frame and tied the contest with 1:57 left. John Erksine blasted a shot from the left point that Biron got the glove on, but he was unable to control it and the rebound popped out front where Semin grabbed the puck and put it in the back of the net.
