Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen's breakaway goal 1:48 into overtime boosted Detroit to a 2-1 win over Nashville, as the Red Wings overcame an incredible effort from Predators goaltender Dan Ellis to grab the lead after five games of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Chris Osgood, starting in place of a struggling Dominik Hasek, stopped 20 shots for the top-seeded Red Wings, who grabbed a 3-2 series edge and have a chance to move to the semifinals on Sunday with a victory in Nashville.
"I felt confident throughout the game," Osgood said. "I feel real good. I wish we had scored some (more) goals, but I really do feel like we're going to break out here."
Valtteri Filppula scored in the first period for Detroit, which has won all three of its games at Joe Louis Arena.
The results have been similar thus far to the 2004 conference quarterfinals. That series was tied after four games, before the Red Wings won the next two against the Predators.
Ellis did all he could to keep the Predators in the game, as he finished with 52 saves, but Detroit scored on its first shot of overtime.
"We were really close," Ellis said. "We did everything we could to put ourselves in a position to get a win. We put some pressure on at the very end there. But we have to do more of that. We can't get 20 shots in a game and give up 50. You have to make an even effort the entire game and put them back on their heels. We didn't play physical enough and we weren't mentally sharp enough."
The Predators forced the extra session on Radek Bonk's goal with 43.4 seconds left in regulation, but faltered right away.
"It was like, typical, here we go again," Franzen said of the break after regulation. "It was a good feeling in the locker room in between. It was only positive thoughts and we wanted it and this is what it's all about. It felt good."
Niklas Kronvall picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and fed Franzen, who approached the net and used a backhander to get the puck by a sliding Ellis. The disc barely trickled by the netminder's left skate and tucked inside the right post.
"I made up my mind right away," Franzen said. "I was going to try to deke him and go backhand. Shots, they didn't seem to work for me this night. So that didn't work so I had to try something else."
Nashville remained without a road win in its playoff history, falling to 0-9.
The Red Wings were awarded a power play with 3:42 remaining in regulation after Martin Erat intentionally knocked the puck off its moorings. Mikael Samuelsson's shot from the left circle was stopped and Ellis saved the rebound try from Samuelsson. As the puck remained loose, Erat dislodged the goal, causing the power play.
Ellis was pulled from net with over a minute remaining, and the Predators pressured, winning an offensive zone face-off. Ryan Suter missed the net on a one-timer from the top of the right circle, but Nashville was able to gain possession behind the net.
J.P. Dumont passed the puck from behind the net to Bonk, who then put the disc past the glove of Osgood.
"There's no words to describe it," Dumont said of the loss. "He (Ellis) was on top of his game and we didn't play our best game. We scored a big goal to get it to overtime, but the game's not over then. It would have been nice if we'd found a way to win for Ellie. The way he played tonight, he deserved to win."
Just 4:20 into the game, Filppula skated with the puck to the left circle before wristing the puck to the upper right corner of the net. The puck deflected off the bar in the corner, but was reviewed before the Red Wings were quickly awarded the lead.
Although the Red Wings dominated play in the opening 40 minutes, Ellis kept his team in the game, making 36 saves through two periods. Daniel Cleary had a breakaway chance while shorthanded with nearly six minutes left in the first, but Ellis made the save.
Ellis faced 17 shots on goal in the opening period, and Nashville failed on a pair of power play opportunities in first 20 minutes.
Dallas Drake was called for a hooking penalty 23 seconds into the second for Detroit, but Nashville failed to capitalize and had just three shots the entire period.
If not for Ellis, the Predators would've been down more than a goal. The 27- year-old from Orangeville, Ontario turned aside 20 shots in the second period.
