NHL Game Summary - Washington at Philadelphia

Final Score: Washington 3 - Philadelphia 6

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Danny Briere had two goals and an assist as the Philadelphia Flyers doubled up the Washington Capitals, 6-3, in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at Wachovia Center.

Vinny Prospal had three assists while Mike Richards added a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who now lead the best-of-seven series, 2-1. Martin Biron stopped 16 shots in the win.

"I love the effort of our team tonight," said Philadelphia coach John Stevens. "The crowd and the noise were terrific. Danny had a twinkle in his eye tonight and that line really got us going tonight."

Mike Green had a goal and an assist while Eric Fehr and Brooks Laich each scored for the Capitals, who had won four straight games in Philadelphia coming into the contest. Cristobal Huet was charged with five goals on 32 shots in the loss.

"We can't expect to come back from a two goal deficit every night," Huet said. "They worked very hard tonight and had a good night and we are going to have to match that at the next game if we want to be successful. They just were more desperate tonight and we're going to have to realize that it's going to take a lot more from everyone to be successful."

Game 4 is set for Thursday in the City of Brotherly Love.

Much of the first period went scoreless, but the teams combined for four goals in a 2:33 span late in the frame.

The Flyers were the first ones to strike as Prospal brought the puck into the Washington end and from the high slot sent the disc over to Briere, who from the low left circle picked the left corner of the net and got it past Huet at the 16:10 mark of the frame.

Just 1:11 later, Washington tied the game as Donald Brashear had the puck behind the net and centered it for Fehr, who one-timed it under the right pad of Biron.

However, Philadelphia answered with a pair of goals separated by 17 seconds to take a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

With the puck in the Capitals zone, Prospal sent a cross-ice pass from the left boards to the right circle where Scott Hartnell let loose with a big blast that beat Huet over the glove with Briere causing havoc in front of the net with 1:34 left in the frame.

Moments later, Milan Jurcina attempted to get the puck out of the zone from the right side of his net, but Jim Dowd picked it off and left it for Sami Kapanen, who snapped a shot into the low left corner.

Washington cut its deficit to 3-2 at the 7:28 mark of the second period. On the power play, Green had the puck at the right point, faked a slap shot to get the defender on the ice and then blasted the puck past Biron for his third goal of the playoffs.

It appeared that it was going to remain a one-goal game heading into the third period, but the Flyers used their power play to make it a 4-2 contest with just 9.8 seconds left in the second.

The game got close in the third period as Washington made it a one-goal game with 4:34 to play. Shaone Morrisonn let fly with a knuckler from the left circle that Laich tipped over the glove of Biron. The play was reviewed to determine if Laich hit the puck with a high stick, but the call on the ice was upheld.

However, just 1:35 later, Richards was hauled down by Morrisonn on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. He skated in on net, faked to the backhand and slipped the puck between the pads of Huet for a 5-3 advantage with 2:59 to play.

Mike Knuble's empty-netter with 1:05 to play sealed the victory for the Flyers.
