NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Philadelphia

Final Score: New Jersey 0 - Philadelphia 3

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Martin Biron made 22 saves, posting his fourth shutout of the season, and Philadelphia earned an improbable 3-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils at the Wachovia Center, on a night the Flyers clinched a playoff berth.

It was the 22nd shutout of Biron's career, having come at the most critical of times. With the win, the Flyers jumped over idle Washington for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference with 93 points. Then, just minutes following the conclusion of the game, Carolina (92 points) lost its regular season finale, falling to Florida, 4-3 in regulation, cementing Philadelphia's postseason status.

"It feels great. It feels unbelievable," said Flyers head coach John Stevens. "We obviously left it to the very end but to see the joy on the faces of these guys...I think they battled hard. We've obviously had some ups and downs, but man, what a great accomplishment for this group."

The Devils were blanked in their first game against the Flyers this season, but had taken six straight from them by a combined 28-12 score.

R.J. Umberger, Scottie Upshall and Joffrey Lupul all tallied for the Flyers, who played without Danny Briere. The veteran forward suffered a left knee injury in Wednesday's 4-2 loss in Pittsburgh after he took a nasty hit from Penguins forward Jarkko Ruutu.

The Flyers are a point behind Ottawa and Boston, who are tied for sixth place. Philadelphia can improve its seeding with a home win over the Penguins on Sunday. The Senators, who lost at home to the Bruins on Friday, are finished with their regular season schedule, but Boston hosts Buffalo Saturday night.

Martin Brodeur made 33 saves for New Jersey, which had a three-game win streak snapped but can lock up the fourth seed in the East -- and home ice advantage -- with a point in its game against the New York Rangers Sunday at the Prudential Center. Kevin Weekes also made a brief appearance between the pipes, stopping one shot in the third period.

Playing with a sense of desperation, the Flyers peppered Brodeur early and often. The netminder proved more than capable, though, until a shot wide of the net was thrown back in front by Scott Hartnell. A deflection off the stick of New Jersey's Mike Mottau was then swept in by Umberger at the 5:44 mark.

Philadelphia didn't score the rest of the stanza, but the tone had been set, as the orange and black outshot New Jersey 14-6 heading to the first intermission.

Both clubs wasted a 5-on-3 opportunity in the second, as the special teams buckled down, playing a more disciplined game.

Shots were 31-12 in favor of Philadelphia heading to the third, but the score remained 1-0.

It was Biron's show the rest of the way, as he made several key saves in the third. None proved bigger than when he swallowed a rebound with New Jersey on the man-advantage and 9:39 remaining in the contest.

Less than a minute later, Upshall put the Flyers up 2-0 during four-aside hockey. Directly off the faceoff, Randy Jones drew the puck back to Jeff Carter, who then put a perfect pass in the slot where Upshall one-timed it past Brodeur.

Then, just 27 seconds after that tally, Mike Richards put a perfect feed on the tape of Lupul's stick, and he jammed the puck home from the goalmouth for a 3-0 advantage.

"We played pretty close to a perfect game," said Richards afterward.
