Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 left in overtime and Dominik Hasek recorded his 81st career shutout as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the playoff-hopeful Nashville Predators, 1-0, at Joe Louis Arena.
With the game scoreless at the end of regulation, the Predators had a golden opportunity to end the contest. Ryan Suter had a clear-cut breakaway 1:37 into the extra period, but Hasek was able to fight off the wrister to keep the game going.
After both teams played cautious for the next few minutes, Henrik Zetterberg brought the puck in the Nashville zone, fired a wrist shot from the middle slot that was blocked in front, but Franzen, who was following up the play, chipped the disc past goaltender Dan Ellis for the game-winner.
"I didn't get all of it, and it touched something," Franzen said of the game- winning tally. "Maybe the defenseman and the goalie helped. When he tried to save it, he pushed it in. It was a lucky break, I guess."
Hasek, who had missed the previous two games due to the flu, was solid, stopping all 22 shots faced as Detroit won for the fifth time in its last six games. The Red Wings, who have won their division for the seventh straight season, are trying for their third Presidents' Trophy in four years as they shoot for the best record in the NHL.
"That's a huge point in this building this time of year," Nashville head coach Barry Trotz said. "That point will be the one that gets us in, not the one that keeps us out."
Ellis was spectacular, stopping 35-of-36 shots for the Predators, who had a brief three-game winning streak halted. Franzen's tally ended Ellis' franchise-record 233 minute and 39 second shutout streak. Nashville now has 87 points, but is one behind Vancouver for the eighth and final postseason berth in the Western Conference. The Canucks beat up on the Calgary Flames, 6-2, on Sunday.
After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings game out for the second, opening up things on the offensive end, but Ellis, who was coming off back-to-back shutouts of Columbus was equal to the task, knocking away 16 shots in the frame.
Nashville had a number of quality chances in the second, including a shorthanded opportunity by Vernon Fiddler 6:21 into the stanza, but his backhander hit the post.
Detroit was awarded a power play with 4:27 left in the session when Martin Erat was whistled for delay of game, but despite heavy pressure on the Nashville net, the Wings were unable to light the lamp.
Neither team could muster any quality chances in the third with Detroit outshooting Nashville, 9-6.
