Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Dustin Penner notched the game-winning goal midway through the third period as Edmonton survived Calgary, 2-1, in a Northwest Division clash at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Denis Grebeshkov also scored for the Oilers, who bounced back from a pair of defeats including a disappointing shootout loss to Colorado on Friday to forge a three-way tie with Nashville and Vancouver for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Dwayne Roloson earned the win with 31 saves.
Matthew Lombardi provided the lone offense for the Flames, who still trail Minnesota by three points for first place in the Northwest Division. Calgary also remained tied with idle Colorado for the sixth seed in the West, two points behind Dallas, which crushed Los Angeles 7-2 earlier Saturday.
"We had lots of chances throughout the game, and we got ourselves where we wanted to be at 1-0," said Flames captain Jarome Iginla. "Things aren't always going to go our way with as many chances. Losses are always hard at this time of year, but we had a couple breakdowns. With a game in hand, we're going to have to get back at it tomorrow."
The Flames, who have dropped two of three, face another stiff division test on Sunday, on the road against Vancouver.
Miikka Kiprusoff was less than stellar, making only 19 saves in the loss.
Penner pushed the Oilers ahead by a goal with 9:12 left in regulation, taking a dish from Ales Hemsky, wheeling from the goal line into the right circle and ripping a shot inside the far post.
Calgary appeared to have tied the game with 51 seconds in the contest, but a bouncing shot from the right point, deflected through Roloson by Alex Tanguay, caromed off the inside of left post. A replay determined the puck did skirt the goal line without crossing over before kicking back into the crease.
"I had no clue where it was, all I heard was (defenseman) Tom Gilbert yelling behind me, so I just fell down," Roloson admitted.
One last Flames push in the Oilers' zone with Kiprusoff on the bench was foiled when Edmonton's Robert Nilsson got his stick on a cross-ice pass and deflected it down the ice as time ran out.
The contest was a close-checking, goaltending duel, as both sides didn't have many quality chances to put the puck in the net through a scoreless two periods.
Lombardi finally ended the stalemate at 5:43 of the third, as Roloson slipped just as Wayne Primeau fed the young winger for a blistering one-timer from the right circle.
Edmonton bounced back a little more than a minute later when Grebeshkov was allowed to sail in alone up the slot and beat Kiprusoff with a wrister.
