Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Roenick's second-period tally proved to be the game-winner as the San Jose Sharks clinched the Pacific Division crown with a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center.
Patrick Marleau and Curtis Brown also tallied, while Brian Boucher -- once buried in the minors -- made 23 saves for San Jose, which has not suffered a regulation loss since falling to the New Jersey Devils on February 20. The club is a remarkable 16-0-2 in that span.
The Sharks, who boast the league's second-best record overall, have 104 points -- five behind Detroit in the Western Conference with four games remaining in the regular season. San Jose had last won the division in 2003-04.
"It's humongous, it's huge," Roenick said. "Especially being in the division with the Stanley Cup champions. Obviously it's a good feeling, but it's the first step in the process that we have in our minds right now."
Scott Niedermayer recorded the only goal and Jonas Hiller stopped 24-of-27 shots for Anaheim, which had a two-game win streak snapped and tasted defeat as the host for the first time since February 15, halting a franchise-best 10- game win streak.
The Ducks, who are second in the division and fourth in the West, have already reached the postseason for the sixth time in the franchise's 14-year history.
"We just gave it away, I think they wanted it more than us. We didn't play on our level again, so that's disappointing for us," Anaheim's Teemu Selanne said. "You have to give credit to those guys. They're playing well. But there's no excuse and we just have to be better than that."
The Sharks were first on the scoresheet, as Marleau notched his 17th of the campaign 6:38 into the contest. Christian Ehrhoff started the play with his entry on the left wing, and he dished to Joe Pavelski in between the circles. Pavelski botched the pass, but the puck skidded right to Marleau, who lit the lamp with the clubs skating four-aside.
Anaheim answered on the power play, as Bobby Ryan set things up nicely by winning a battle along the boards. He drew the puck back to the point for Mathieu Schneider, whose feed found Niedermayer in the high slot. Niedermayer then took a stride toward the net and unleashed a wrister that sailed past Boucher at 11:09.
Roenick's power-play marker -- and 1,200th career point -- put the Sharks back on top, 2-1, at 11:10 of the second period.
The visitors upped the lead to 3-1 late in the stanza, as Pavelski tried to stuff the puck home on the short side. Brown then charged in and finished the job, pushing the disc across the goal line with 2:54 remaining.
The Sharks played defensive-minded hockey the rest of the way, and Boucher stopped all 10 shots that he saw in the third.
