Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Dion Phaneuf's third-period goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Calgary Flames rallied to down the Vancouver Canucks, 3-2, at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow each registered a goal and an assist for the Flames, who leapt over idle Minnesota for first place in the Northwest Division. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 32-of-34 shots to pick up the win.
Markus Naslund and Daniel Sedin tallied for the Canucks, who remained tied with idle Colorado for seventh place in the Western Conference. Roberto Luongo surrendered three goals on 40 shots in defeat.
Trailing 2-1 in the third period, the Flames were awarded a 5-on-3 power play for 1:11 after Alex Burrows joined Taylor Pyatt in the penalty box at the 10:25 mark.
Calgary knotted the score at two when Langkow stationed himself in the low slot, angled his stick perfectly and redirected Alex Tanguay's pass in behind Luongo with 9:14 remaining.
Phaneuf lit the lamp 41 seconds later to give the Flames a 3-2 lead. As Burrows continued to stew in the box, the Flames caught the Canucks in a bad line change as Adrian Aucion sent a long, lead pass to Phaneuf at the offensive blue line. The rugged defenseman then took a few strides before unleashing a hard slap shot from the top of the left circle that beat Luongo high on the short side.
Owen Nolan was called for hooking with 2:02 left in regulation and Vancouver pulled Luongo to create a 6-on-4 advantage, but wasn't able to net the equalizer.
Vancouver thoroughly dominated the opening frame, outshooting Calgary 21-7.
Naslund made it 1-0 on the power play. Brendan Morrison kept in Cory Sarich's clearing attempt at the blue line and quickly dished to Alexander Edler, whose one-timer from the point was stopped by the left pad of Kiprusoff. The Vancouver captain then collected the rebound and buried it in the back of the net at the 9:29 mark of the first period.
Sedin found the twine behind Kiprusoff 12 seconds later to give the Canucks a 2-0 lead.
The Flames took control in the second period, firing 18 shots on goal while limiting the opposition to three. Iginla put Calgary on the board when he stormed the net and jammed home a loose puck at 2:11.
