St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen's third-period power-play goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center.
Henrik Zetterberg also scored for Detroit, which has won four straight. The Red Wings have already captured the Central Division crown and are closing in on both the top seed in the Western Conference and their third Presidents' Trophy in the last four seasons as the team with the best record in the regular season.
Detroit goaltender Chris Osgood made 17 saves in the victory.
Andy McDonald scored the only goal for the Blues, who are winless in their last three and fell to 2-8-2 in the month of March. Manny Legace turned aside 30 shots in the losing effort.
"They came out firing in the third period and they're a good hockey team," said Legace. "You've got to battle these guys -- they don't get 100 points every year for throwing their sticks on the ice. They're a good hockey team and they work harder than any team every single night."
With the score tied 1-1, the Wings grabbed the lead for good on a power-play goal by Franzen. After Paul Kariya was whistled for a hooking minor, Detroit went to work with the extra skater. Nicklas Lidstrom held control inside the lower left circle and fired a shot toward the net that was deflected into the air. The puck settled inside the crease and Franzen, from in close, backhanded home his 23rd goal with 11:38 remaining in regulation.
"On the game-winning goal, I don't know if (Legace) really saw where the puck ended up," said Lidstrom. "I think my shot got deflected and Franzen was there for the rebound."
Osgood faced only three shots over the course of the entire third period.
The only goal of the first period was scored by Zetterberg with 4:11 remaining. It was his 41st of the season and was assisted by Dan Cleary and Pavel Datsyuk.
In the early stages of the second stanza, the Blues tied it up. D.J. King's hustle along the half-wall allowed the puck to squirt free and it was picked up in the neutral zone by McDonald, who streaked across the blue line down the right-wing side, cut toward the front of the front of the net and, with Detroit's Cleary draped on his back, slid home a backhander at the 2:36 mark.
