Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist for a career-high three points, as the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, at Nationwide Arena.
Ole-Kristian Tollefsen and Nikolai Zherdev scored a goal apiece for the Blue Jackets, who have won two of three. Fredrik Norrena made 43 saves for Columbus, which won despite being outshot 46-17.
"The goalie was great," said Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock. "Freddy was able to play the last game, so that helped. He was good. Our goaltender bailed us out."
Johan Franzen scored two goals and Tomas Kopecky had one for the Red Wings, who have dropped two in a row since their five-game winning streak.
Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek was pulled in favor of Chris Osgood in the second period after allowing four goals on just 10 shots.
"After the first period the shots on goal were 12-4," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "After two periods they had ten of something. I'm not trying to take anything away from them. I don't think it was lack of preparation or urgency, the puck just went in the net."
Malhotra scored the lone goal of the first period at the 3:23 mark, beating Hasek through the five-hole.
Tollefsen put the Blue Jackets ahead 2-0 at the 6:07 mark of the second period. Tollefsen's shot from the left circle caromed off the skate Detroit's Chris Chelios before Hasek inadvertently kicked the puck into his own goal.
Just 1:12 later, Malhotra deflected a shot by Rick Nash that beat Hasek and gave Columbus a 3-0 advantage. Malhotra's two goals give him eight on the season.
Kopecky finally put the Red Wings on the board with his fifth goal of the season at the 9:15 mark of the second period.
The Blue Jackets responded a little more than two minutes later on Zherdev's snapper from the slot -- his 25th of the season -- on a centering pass from Malhotra.
Columbus pushed its lead to 4-1 with 8:06 left in the second. Zherdev took a centering pass from Malhotra and beat Hasek with a wrister from the slot.
Detroit made a push late in the game. On the power play, Pavel Datsyuk fed Franzen for an easy goal with 4:49 remaining.
Franzen added another goal with a shot from the left circle that cut the Red Wings' deficit to 4-3 with 2:02 to go but Norrena shut the door the rest of the way.
