San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Milan Michalek registered a goal and an assist for the red-hot San Jose Sharks, who extended their franchise-record winning streak to 11 games, with a 4-1 decision over the floundering St. Louis Blues at HP Pavilion.
Brian Campbell also posted a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who have not lost since February 20th. Joe Thornton collected two assists, while Evgeni Nabokov made 20 saves to earn his league-leading 41st win of the season.
San Jose has 92 points on the season and holds a three-point lead over Dallas for first place in Pacific Division.
David Backes scored the only goal for the Blues, who have dropped five in a row and 11 of their last 12 games overall. Hannu Toivonen was roughed up for four goals on 27 shots.
The Sharks blew the game open with a four-goal barrage in the first period.
Michalek opened the scoring when he put the puck up over the glove of Toivonen 70 seconds into the contest. San Jose grabbed a 2-0 lead on Jeremy Roenick's 11th tally of the season, as the veteran forward deflected a blast from Craig Rivet in behind Toivonen.
Less than two minutes later, Campbell tapped in a goalmouth pass from Thornton to make it 3-0. With 6:35 remaining in the opening stanza, Patrick Marleau was awarded a penalty shot after he was hauled down by St. Louis' Erik Johnson. The Sharks captain snapped a wrister that beat Toivonen on the blocker side to give San Jose an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
"We had a lot of energy," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "We wanted to get off to a good start and discourage them (Blues). They were a team that was looking for anything to build on and we didn't want that to happen."
The Blues began the second period on the power play and Backes knocked in a rebound 54 seconds into the frame to make it 4-1.
St. Louis mustered only four shots in the third period, as San Jose coasted to the finish.
