Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 24 shots he faced for his fifth career shutout to lead the Phoenix Coyotes to a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Niko Kapanen and Dan Winnik scored for Phoenix, which has won two straight and climbed within three points of these Canucks for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Coyotes also trail Nashville by one point and will host Edmonton on Saturday.
Roberto Luongo was very strong with 43 saves for the Canucks, who have dropped two straight following three consecutive wins. Vancouver currently holds the aforementioned eighth seed, but is also only four points behind Colorado for the lead in the Northwest Division.
Kapanen's 10th goal opened the scoring at the 10:32 mark of the second period. The Coyotes were skating on the power play due to an interference penalty on Ryan Kesler and Kapanen's one-timer -- after a pass by Keith Ballard -- from inside the right circle lit the lamp.
At the 7:32 mark of the final stanza, Winnik capped the scoring. Martin Hanzal stole the puck from Vancouver's Henrik Sedin in the neutral zone and skated into the right circle. Hanzel then stopped, drew a defender toward him and sent a perfect feed for Winnik, who lit the lamp from the lower left slot.
The Canucks mustered only five shots on the goal in the third period and were hampered by 41 penalty minutes throughout the contest that never allowed them to get on track.
Vancouver's best scoring chance occurred with under 12 minutes remaining in regulation when Kesler nearly tallied via a one-timer from the left side, but Bryzgalov made a nice pad save.
