Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk recorded two goals and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings scored twice in the first 61 seconds of the third period to pull past the Dallas Stars, 5-3, and clinch the Central Division crown.
It was the seventh straight division title for the Red Wings, who have qualified for the playoffs for the 17th straight season -- the longest current streak in American professional sports.
Valtteri Filppula added a goal and two assists for Detroit, which has won five straight in March since ending February on a four-game losing streak. Mikael Samuelsson picked up the go-ahead go early in the third, and Johan Franzen contributed a goal and a helper.
Chris Osgood made 16 saves to earn the win.
The victory gives the Red Wings 100 points for the season, while upping their NHL-best record to 47-18-6. It is the eighth straight season Detroit has reached the century mark, tying Montreal's NHL record set between 1974 and 1982.
Brenden Morrow scored his 27th goal of the season for Dallas, which has lost four of five. Jere Lehtinen and Trevor Daley also tallied, while Marty Turco allowed four goals on 30 shots.
The Stars lost an opportunity to leapfrog idle San Jose for the Pacific Division lead. Dallas remains at 89 points, one behind the Sharks, winners of 10 games in a row.
With Detroit down a goal just 36 seconds into the third, Datsyuk picked up a bouncing puck in the right circle, wound up and unleashed a slapper that blew by Turco to force a 3-3 deadlock.
Only 25 seconds later, another bouncing puck accounted for Detroit's go-ahead tally. Brad Stuart's shot was blocked by Turco's shoulder and bounced into the slot, where it was tipped by Franzen, then Samuelsson, before the puck deflected off the stick of Dallas' Stephane Robidas and wobbled over Turco for the goal.
"We had a bad start in the first two periods, but a good start in the third," Datsyuk said. "We tried to put (the puck) behind the defensemen and play more in the offensive zone, shoot more and have traffic."
Osgood made a stunning glove save on Mike Ribeiro with 59 seconds to play, plucking his blistering slapper out of the air to preserve the win. Filppula added an empty net marker with 4.2 seconds left.
"I think we sort of sat back and tried to play with the lead," Morrow said. "We were on our heels to start the third."
Detroit played without center Kris Draper, who is out for the next several days with a slight tear in his groin.
Dallas jumped in front, 1-0, just 1:08 into the game when Daley fired a shot from the point through a screen and past Osgood.
The Red Wings tied the game just over 6 1/2 minutes later. After Antti Miettinen was whistled for slashing to put Detroit on the power play, Datsyuk won the ensuing faceoff and slipped the puck to Nicklas Lidstrom at the point for a shot that was deflected by Franzen and behind Turco.
"The first one gave us a lot of life," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "We had played pretty well and hadn't given up a lot, but if you work it in deep and create a lot of traffic, and get to the net we'd have a good opportunity."
Dallas again struck early in the second period, going ahead 2-1 just 44 seconds in when Joel Lundqvist controlled the puck behind the goal line, wheeled around and fired a shot in front of the net where it was redirected home by Lehtinen.
Morrow's power play marker with 6:18 to play in the second increased the Stars' lead to two.
Datsyuk cut the deficit to 3-2 with 3:43 left in the second, scooping up a loose puck in the right circle and firing a shot on Turco. Datsyuk's first try was kicked away, but he picked up the rebound and swept the buck behind a prone Turco for the tally.
"Anytime we get some hesitation in our game, it's tough to win, especially against Detroit," Morrow said. "They capitalize on your mistakes."
