Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 1:54 left in regulation, as Washington clipped Calgary, 3-2, at Verizon Center.
Viktor Kozlov also lit the lamp for the Capitals, who put the brakes on a two- game slide and won for the third time in their last five games.
Olaf Kolzig made 24 stops to earn the win, his 24th this year and 300th career NHL victory -- all with Washington.
Jarome Iginla and Kristin Huselius scored for the Flames, who had won three of four coming into the contest. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 34 shots in the loss.
Ovechkin picked up his league-best 56th goal on the power play. After taking a wobbly pass from Mike Green, the Russian sniper settled the puck, wound up and fired from just below the right faceoff dot. Kiprusoff appeared not to see the shot as Caps forward Brooks Laich set up directly in front of him.
Kiprusoff was called to the bench with 1:03 remaining but the Flames were powerless to generate any chances as time ran out.
Kozlov put the Caps on the board 53 seconds into the contest. After a right circle draw win, Jeff Schultz fed to the bottom of the circle to Nicklas Backstrom. His wrister deflected off Kozlov's body in front and slipped into the net.
Iginla drew the Flames even on a power play with 45.2 seconds left, taking Dion Phaneuf's feed in the low slot and rifling the puck through traffic and past Kolzig.
Huselius pushed Calgary ahead by a goal, as he accepted a pass from Iginla in the right circle and ripped a shot inside the right post at 8:57 of the second for a power-play tally.
However, with Huselius in the penalty box, Ovechkin crept closer to the franchise goal-scoring record. He notched his 55th of the season, converting a wrister from the left circle with 2:05 to play in the second for a 2-2 deadlock.
