Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Devin Setoguchi scored a pair of goals as the San Jose Sharks downed the slumping Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.
Joe Pavelski scored the other goal while Evgeni Nabokov stopped 20 shots for the Sharks, who have won four straight after dropping their previous five games.
"When you hold a team like Detroit to only 22 shots on goal, you've done a helluva job," said San Jose coach Ron Wilson.
San Jose has 78 points and sits in the fifth spot in the Western Conference, three behind Anaheim and three ahead of Calgary.
Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist while Dominik Hasek made 19 saves in the loss for the Red Wings, who have dropped four straight and 10 of their last 11 games.
"It's been disappointing after losing so many games in a row," said Hasek. "Coming home you believe you can win and unfortunately it didn't happen tonight."
Detroit has 90 points and still leads the Western Conference and the NHL, but has saw its once significant lead fall to three points ahead of Dallas.
San Jose grabbed a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the game. Pat Rissmiller had the puck at the left circle and backhanded a pass to the slot where Pavelski wristed a shot into the right corner of the net.
Nabokov made seven saves in the first period to keep Detroit off the board.
The Sharks took a 2-0 lead 52 seconds into the second period as Patrick Marleau fired a pass from the deep right boards to the slot and Setoguchi fired a one-timer over the glove of Hasek.
However, Detroit got on the board less than two minutes later on the power play as Niklas Kronwall fired a hard pass from the high slot to the left side where Zetterberg redirected the puck past Nabokov.
The Sharks took a 3-1 lead on an odd goal. Craig Rivet blasted a shot from the high slot that hit a stick in front, went over the net and appeared to hit the mesh on top of the boards, which would have whistled the play dead. The puck went to the low right side where Setoguchi knocked it in with 10:43 to play. Since a goal can't be reviewed for a dead puck, the score was allowed to stand.
"Definitely it was a mistake," said Hasek. "The officials should blow the whistle but not one of the four of them probably saw the puck behind the net, in the net above the glass. I thought it was somewhere back there, but it got back in front of me and before I could cover the hole by the post he had scored the goal. I knew 90 percent the puck was dead but if they didn't see there's nothing I can do about it."
Detroit took advantage of a pair of San Jose penalties to make it a one-goal game. On a two-man advantage, Zetterberg fired a pass from the low right circle to the top of the right circle where Mikael Samuelsson's one-timer found the back of the net with 7:07 to play.
