Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Chris Drury scored a goal to extend his point streak to seven games, as the New York Rangers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2.
Brendan Shanahan extended his point streak to six games with a goal, while Sean Avery and Brandon Dubinsky each lit the lamp for the Rangers, who have won six of their last eight games. Henrik Lundqvist got the win, as he stopped 26-of-28 shots.
"We played a good road game and we had a little bit of difficulty with some penalties we took and had to kill off, said Rangers head coach Tom Renney. "We hung in there and found a way to keep our resolve and keep pushing forward. Obviously, scoring a big goal to get it back to a two-goal lead was important."
Erik Cole scored the only goals for the Hurricanes, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Cam Ward got the loss after allowing four goals on 28 shots.
"We did give away the first period," said Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette. "We had chances to get back but we weren't particularly sharp, especially trying to generate offense. They played a good defensive game. I think that's when they're at their best and playing that grinding defense, to overcome it and I don't think that the power play was very efficient either. We talked about a lot of things that we need to do but didnt seem to execute very well."
Only 4:54 into the third period, Cole took control of a loose puck in front of the net and shot the bouncing disc, which trickled past Lundqvist to cut the Rangers lead to 3-2.
The Rangers answered right back however. Less then three minutes later, Shanahan blasted a slap shot from the right faceoff circle that went over the shoulder of Ward, to extend New York's lead to 4-2.
The Rangers opened the scoring 3:50 into the first period. Dubinsky skated in on net, deked Ward and scored on the backhand.
With just under a minute to go, Avery put the Rangers up 2-0 after he fired a wrist shot from the right face-off circle that went through Ward's five-hole.
Early in the second period, Marc Staal fired a shot that was saved by Ward, but rebounded to Drury, who slammed the puck home to give New York a 3-0 lead.
Carolina cut the lead to 3-1, when Cole floated a wrist from the left faceoff circle, the puck deflected of the stick of New York's Daniel Girardi, and slipped by Lundqvist at the 7:39 mark.
