NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Columbus

Final Score: San Jose 4 - Columbus 2

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski finished with a goal and an assist, as the San Jose Sharks downed the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-2, at Nationwide Arena.

Jonathan Cheechoo, Torrey Mitchell, and Jeremy Roenick all tallied a goal for San Jose, which won its third in a row after a five-game losing streak. Evgeni Nabokov faced just 19 shots, and stopped 17 of them.

All-Star defenseman Brian Campbell, who was acquired by San Jose from Buffalo before Tuesday's trade deadline, played in his first game with the Sharks and had an assist.

"For us, they're always a tough team to play," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "They made it difficult for a long time, but we stuck with things."

David Vyborny had two goals, his first in 24 games, but they weren't enough to prevent Columbus from having a two-game win streak snapped. Pascal Leclaire allowed all four goals on 32 shots for the Blue Jackets, whose winless streak at home extended to six games. They are 0-4-2 in the span.

"The players tried for a while and did the best they could," Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We got some emotion off some physical play, and scored some nice goals, but as the game went on we were void of (emotion). We're not going to win games playing the way we did tonight."

Vyborny scored his second goal at the 7:54 mark of the second period, putting the Blue Jackets ahead a goal. But San Jose answered with three goals in the same stanza to take control.

The first came just short of three minutes later, when Matthew Carle managed to get off a shot next to the boards at the left point. Mitchell deflected the puck high over Leclaire's shoulder to tie the game.

Shortly after, San Jose went on a power play as Columbus' Rick Nash was whistled for roughing. The Sharks capitalized a little more than halfway through the man-advantage, as Joe Thornton sent a cross-ice pass for Roenick, who had a one-timer lined up to the left side of the net.

Roenick had to put his right hand way down on the shaft of the stick, but still got the shot off and into the net. It gave San Jose a 3-2 lead, with 6:03 left in the frame.

"When's the last time he had one? I'm glad he finally scored," Wilson said.

Then with just 1:08 left, Pavelski gave the Sharks a two-goal edge when his shot from the left circle went off the left skate of Columbus center Jiri Novotny and between Leclaire's pads.

Each team scored a goal in the first period. Pavelski helped get the Sharks on board first, as his one-timer from above the left circle was redirected by Cheechoo in front past Leclaire at the 7:28 mark.

Vyborny tied up the game, as he backhanded in a loose puck just to the right of the crease with 5:04 left.
