Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Pierre-Marc Bouchard registered a goal and an assist as the Minnesota Wild held off the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-2, at St. Pete Times Forum.
Pavol Demitra and Brian Rolston also scored, while Niklas Backstrom made 31 saves for the Wild, who snapped a four-game losing streak.
"We just played well tonight," said Rolston. "We got the goaltending that we needed, Backstrom really stood tall for us, and we did a great job of killing penalties."
Michel Ouellet and Jeff Halpern tallied for the Lightning, who have dropped five in a row. Mike Smith started in goal one day after he was acquired at the NHL trade deadline, but turned aside just 24-of-27 chances in the loss.
Hours before Tuesday's deadline, Tampa Bay acquired Smith, forwards Jussi Jokinen and Halpern, and a future draft pick from Dallas for center Brad Richards and former starting netminder Johan Holmqvist.
Smith, a fifth-round pick by Dallas in 2001, was 12-9-0 with a 2.46 goals- against average and two shutouts heading into the game. He had a personal three-game winning streak snapped - a stretch that began on Feb. 7 when he made 25 saves in a 1-0 win at Minnesota.
"(I was) fighting a lot of things, mentally, I think," said Smith. "It's probably one of the harder games I've ever played, mentally. Just everything that's gone on the last couple of days is new to me, so fighting the nerves a little bit and mentally just wandering everywhere, but for the most part I felt pretty good, (just) disappointed in the outcome."
After a scoreless first period, the Wild clawed in front with a power-play goal early in the second. It came as Bouchard stationed himself in front of Smith, slipping the puck through the netminder's pads at 3:46.
A little more than a minute later, Demitra gave the Wild a quick 2-0 lead with his 13th of the season. The tally was the result of a Lightning turnover, as Mikko Koivu collected the puck at the blue line and stormed down the left wing. He then sent a perfect pass to Demitra, who tapped the puck past Smith from the goal mouth.
Tampa cut it to 2-1 with 7:38 remaining, as Ouellet took a shot from a hard angle under the left circle and got the puck to ricochet off Backstrom's glove.
Minnesota, however, made it a 3-1 game early in the third while skating on the man-advantage. Rolston held the inside edge of the crease and appeared to make contact with Smith, then stuffed the puck behind the netminder at 1:53.
The Lightning got one back near the midpoint, as Halpern tucked the puck through the five-hole of Backstrom, but the netminder was solid the rest of the way.
