NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Edmonton

Final Score: Detroit 3 - Edmonton 4

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Robert Nilsson scored the only goal in the shootout, as the Edmonton Oilers, who blew a two-goal third-period lead, rallied to defeat the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, at Rexall Place.

After Mathieu Garon denied Detroit's Jiri Hudler in the third round, Nilsson lifted a backhander past Chris Osgood to give Edmonton the win.

Tom Gilbert posted a goal and two assists for the Oilers, who set a new NHL record by winning their 13th shootout, breaking the previous mark of 12 set by the Dallas Stars during the 2005-06 campaign.

Geoff Sanderson and Fernando Pisani also lit the lamp, while Garon finished the game with 40 saves.

Valtteri Filppula registered a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who have dropped three straight and nine of 10 overall. Jonathan Ericsson and Pavel Datsyuk also scored, and Osgood allowed three goals on 29 shots in defeat.

Detroit scored three unanswered goals in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit.

While up a man, Filppula threw the puck out to Ericsson at the point and the rookie defenseman fired a one-timer that squeezed between the right arm and body of Garon at 5:42 of the third. It was the first goal and point of the defenseman's career.

Later in the frame, with the Wings on another power play, Datsyuk ripped a wrister from the left circle high over the right shoulder of Garon to knot the score at 2-2.

A bad line change by the Oilers led to Filppula netting the go-ahead with 2:16 left in regulation, but Detroit defenseman Andreas Lilja shot the puck over the glass, resulting in a delay of game penalty with 1:40 on the clock.

Edmonton pulled Garon to make it a 6-on-4 advantage and Pisani deposited a loose puck in front of the net behind Osgood with 29 seconds remaining to send the contest into overtime.

Gilbert opened the scoring at the 2:54 mark of the second when he elevated the puck over a fallen Osgood. At 1:44 of the third, Sanderson, playing in the 1,100th game of his NHL career, slipped the puck between the pads of Osgood to make it 2-0.
