Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Cheechoo scored his 18th goal of the season and Jeremy Roenick posted the deciding tally in a shootout as the San Jose Sharks took down the Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1, at Mellon Arena.
After Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu scored with a phenomenal backhand move to tie the shootout at 2-2 in the third round, Roenick beat goaltender Ty Conklin on the stick side with a wrister to give the Sharks their second straight win after a five-game losing streak.
Evgeni Nabokov allowed just one goal on 21 shots to earn the win, and Joe Thornton picked up his 54th assist on the season for San Jose.
"We've been playing well," said Sharks head coach Ron Wilson. "We just didn't make any of those kinds of capital errors that have been haunting us in the past couple of weeks. This is one of our most complete games. I'm disappointed that we had to do it in a shootout, but I can't complain about our effort at all tonight."
Pittsburgh's Erik Christensen opened the shootout by faking a shot and dragging the puck behind Nabokov for the score. Joe Pavelski evened it up at one apiece using a hesitation move to beat Conklin, then Nabokov made a spectacular, sprawling save on Kris Letang's wrist shot to maintain the tie.
Cheechoo fired a shot through Conklin's five-hole to give the Sharks a 2-1 advantage, but Ruutu extended the shootout by slowly maneuvering in front of Nabokov and backhanding the puck into the net.
Conklin was terrific in the losing effort, making 36 saves as Pittsburgh dropped its second straight game. The Penguins picked up a point to increase their season total to 77, but fell two behind the Atlantic Division-leading Devils, who notched a 2-1 overtime win in Washington Sunday.
Christensen also scored Pittsburgh's only goal in regulation, while Sergei Gonchar added his 41st helper on the year.
Before the game, the Penguins recalled goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from his conditioning assignment in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Fleury missed 28 games after suffering an ankle injury December 6 against Calgary, but was not active for the game.
After two scoreless periods, Cheechoo broke through just 3:10 into the third. Cheechoo took a pass from Thornton at the blue line, muscled his way around Pittsburgh's Ryan Whitney to the front of the net and powered home a forehand shot past Conklin.
The Penguins tied the game up two seconds past the midway point of the third, taking advantage of a Jody Shelley hooking minor when Gonchar found Christensen for a blast from below the right circle that beat Nabokov.
Both teams had chances to go ahead on the power play in the final five minutes, but the goaltenders held strong to preserve the tie and force the extra session.
Conklin stopped all five San Jose shots in the overtime. including a spectacular save on Christian Ehrhoff's one-timer rocket from the point with 51 seconds left, while the Penguins didn't manage a single shot in the five minute period, leading to the shootout.
"We showed a lot of resilience and character," said Penguins head coach Michel Therrien. "For those reasons that I am saying I was afraid of this game, we played against a quality team. It was a big test for us to play Montreal, Ottawa and San Jose. I was afraid of today's game because of many reasons, we managed to get a point, but we couldn't get two."
