Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Alexander Frolov had a hat trick as the Los Angeles Kings pounded the St. Louis Blues, 5-1, at Staples Center.
Patrick O'Sullivan had a goal and four assists while Mike Cammalleri added three assists for the Kings, who had dropped three of four coming into the contest.
Dan Cloutier stopped 32-of-33 shots in the win.
"We had some good efforts from our guys tonight," said O'Sullivan. "We weren't too happy with our last game, so tonight it was important for us to have a good effort."
Manny Legace started in net for the Blues, who had won four of their last five games, and was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 19 shots. Chris Beckford-Tseu, making his first appearance in the NHL, finished the game between the pipes and stopped eight shots. Martin Rucinsky got the lone goal.
"Every loss stings right now as we're trying to get into the playoffs," said St. Louis coach Andy Murray. "It certainly stings, but they're one of the highest scoring teams in the league, so we know they have the potential to score goals."
It was a scoreless first period as St. Louis outshot Los Angeles, 13-5, in the frame.
Los Angeles, though, exploded for four goals in the middle frame to take control of the contest.
On the power play, O'Sullivan fired a shot on net from the right circle that was stopped, but Anze Kopitar was on the doorstep and backhanded the rebound into the net at the 6:43 mark.
Less than two minutes later, the Kings rushed the puck down the ice, but the play was broken up in front, Frolov, though, was trailing the play uncovered and he poked the puck into the net before anyone got to him.
Frolov got the next goal with a bit over nine minutes to play in the second as he backhanded a loose puck into the net from the left side.
Los Angeles again used the power play to take a four-goal lead. Brad Stuart blasted a shot from the high slot that went over the net, but it came to O'Sullivan at the right side and he slid it past Legace with 6:37 left in the frame.
Cloutier stopped 11 shots in the second period to keep St. Louis off the board.
Frolov completed the hat trick at the 3:31 mark of the final period as his pass from behind the net hit off a Blues defenseman and went into the net.
Rucinsky's power-play goal on a redirection with 4:02 to play spoiled Cloutier's shutout bid.
