Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Niklas Hagman scored early in the third period and Marty Turco recorded his second shutout of the season and 32nd of his career as the Dallas Stars edged the Detroit Red Wings, 1-0, at American Airlines Center.
Turco stopped all 28 shots faced for the Stars, who have won two straight and nine of their last 10. Turco has just two wins in 16 all-time games against the Red Wings.
"Marty needed to be good and he sure was," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "His record against these guys isn't because he hasn't been trying. He made some big saves today and played a great game. We needed that from him."
Jimmy Howard, who was making his fifth career start and first since December 13, 2005 was solid, stopping 30-of-31 shots for Detroit, which has dropped a season-high six in a row after winning its previous eight.
Despite the Red Wings recent slide, they still have 87 points, the most in the Western Conference. Dallas is second with 79.
With the contest scoreless after two periods, Steve Ott was whistled for a tripping penalty 45 seconds into the third, giving the Red Wings a power play chance. However, Detroit was unable to light the lamp and the Stars responded.
Following a Detroit turnover in its defensive zone, Jere Lehtinen's shot from the left point was batted away by Howard, but the rebound came to Hagman, who was standing in the low right circle and fired the puck into the open net to give the home team the lead 3:13 into the frame.
"Lehtinen's shot hit the break in by glove and went out the back door," Howard said.
Turco continued his solid play throughout the stanza and made a key save off of a backhand chance by Henrik Zetterberg with 55 seconds left, then robbed Kris Draper with a glove save from the low slot with 50 ticks to go. Following a Detroit timeout, the Red Wings pulled Howard in favor of the extra attacker, but couldn't get the equalizer.
Detroit had a great opportunity to get on the board 5:25 into the opening period when the Red Wings skated in on a 2-0 break. Tomas Kopecky carried the puck in, went to the backhand and hit the near post with Turco sprawled on the ice.
Both goaltenders continued their stellar play through two periods.
