San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Fernando Pisani scored the game-winning goal as the Edmonton Oilers edged the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, at HP Pavilion.
Kyle Brodziak and Ales Hemsky also tallied for Edmonton, which has won four of its last five games. Mathieu Garon stopped 28-of-30 shots in the victory.
"It's a moderate night's work for Matty (Garon) the way we've been giving up a lot of shots and we defended really well in the dangerous areas of the ice," said Edmonton head coach Craig MacTavish. "They had 30 shots but they weren't the spectacular chance variety. Certainly the majority weren't anyway."
Joe Pavelski and Mike Grier lit the lamp, while Evgeni Nabokov ended with 15 saves for the Sharks, who wrapped up a six-game homestand with a 3-2-1 mark. San Jose once again played without captain Patrick Marleau, who missed his second straight game with a groin injury and is considered day-to-day.
"There's definitely some frustration," said Pavelski. "We wanted those two points, didn't get the start we wanted. We came back strong, had good opportunities to close the game and we weren't able to get the goals."
Already up by one, the Oilers looked to seal the game in the third period behind Pisani's goal just 3:33 in. The play developed when Ethan Moreau intercepted the puck at his own blueline and threaded it through the neutral zone and onto the stick of Pisani. The crafty winger did the rest, as he broke in alone and wristed a hard shot over the glove of Nabokov to make it 3-1.
Grier got the Sharks back in it with a short-handed marker, as he beat Garon through the five hole at 8:34. San Jose couldn't sustain that offensive pressure, however, and only made things interesting with seven seconds left. A two-man advantage and Nabokov on the bench resulted in a 6-on-3 chance, but Garon steered aside one final shot.
Both teams skated to a scoreless first period in which they combined for 14 shots on goal. The Oilers had the best scoring chance during a 5-on-3 power play, but Sam Gagner spun around and failed to backhand the puck past Nabokov.
Edmonton came out strong in the second, and needed just 1:31 to take the lead, as Gagner's power play shot from the left circle was tipped home by Hemsky.
Then, just before the midway point, Zack Stortini sent the puck across the slot to Brodziak, who beat Nabokov clean for his third goal in the last two games.
The Sharks finally jumped on the board and cut it to 2-1 when Pavelski rammed a loose puck behind Garon with 3:17 remaining in the stanza.
