Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Kyle Brodziak scored two third-period goals to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild at Rexall Place.
Fernando Pisani and Jarret Stoll also scored for the Oilers, who have won three of their last four games. Mathieu Garon made 38 saves for Edmonton, which will begin a four-game road trip in San Jose on Thursday.
"Garon was great," said Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire. "We had a lot of good chances, but he was in good position. It made the whole difference in the game."
Pavol Demitra and Brian Rolston scored for the Wild, who saw their brief two- game win streak halted. Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom was pulled after the second period. Backstrom allowed two goals on 11 shots and Josh Harding made 10 saves in relief.
Earlier Tuesday, the Oilers learned that defenseman Sheldon Souray will miss the remainder of the season after he underwent surgery on his left shoulder last week. He was placed on injured reserve on January 30 and last played on January 24, when he aggravated an existing issue with the shoulder. The original injury to Souray was suffered during a fight with Vancouver's Byron Ritchie on October 13 and caused the 31-year-old to miss nearly two months.
The Oilers opened the scoring in the latter stages of the first period on Pisani's fifth goal of the season. The Oilers skated over the blue line on a 3-on-2 rush and, from the left side, Andrew Cogliano sent a cross-ice pass to Pisani, who beat Backstrom with a long wrist shot from above the right circle at 18:12.
At 7:57 of the second period, Demitra tied it up with his 12 goal. After a faceoff win inside the right circle, the puck made its way back to the near point for a one-timer by Kurtis Foster. Garon made the save, but the rebound was punched home by Demitra at the right post.
Midway through the middle session, the Oilers grabbed a 2-1 lead with a power- play goal. Following a delay-of-game penalty called on Mark Parrish, the hosts went to work with the extra skater and the puck eventually made its way back to Stoll. From the centerpoint, Stoll unloaded a wrist shot that beat Backstrom clean with help from a screen in front by Dustin Penner.
Edmonton took firm control in the early stages of the third courtesy of two goals by Brodziak. After he notched his 7th goal at the 2:09 mark, the young center struck again at 4:30. Denis Grebeshkov held control inside the left circle and passed across the high slot for Brodziak, who corralled the puck and lit the lamp with a wrister from above the right circle.
Rolston's power-play marker with 4:06 remaining in regulation capped the scoring.
"Every game right now is like a 'Game 7' mentality in a lot of ways," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "That type of pressure can be stifling, but it also has a way of giving players a lot of experience playing in critical and crucial spots."
